Guess The Year: July 4th, 19??

phpVZ90IJPM.jpg

The last Guess The Year post was a little too easy (read: find-able on the internet), so all we're going to tell you about this one is that it was taken on July 4th... do you know the year? We'll update later with the answer, and more details about the photograph.

UPDATE: The photo was taken in 1953, and shows a NYC Police helicopter hovering over the East River near a daytime tour boat. That's the Queensborough Bridge in the background.

Here's a hint: if you found the photo on the internet, it's Googleable. 1953.

  • yes, silly me for thinking this would be a fun series and not just a way for people to show they can cheat and use Google. congrats on knowing how to use the internet everyone!

    I would guess 1950s...so I'll ballpark 1953

1949 New York City's first helicopter station began operating from a pier on the East River on May 18, 1949.

The helicopter is a dead giveaway. It is definitely a Bell 47 variant, likely a 47D/H-13 due to the float kit and enclosed tail rotor.

Since the Bell 47 debuted in 1945, and wasn't widely distributed until some time afterwords, I would say, if this is a H-13, the year would be 1951, and not a day earlier.

    1949. just have a feeling.

  • poxod

This was taken on the 4th of July and there is only one boat on the East River? That suggests it was taken during the War. I say 1944, just a few weeks after D-Day.

  • sadpanda

I'll go for 1950 on the dot.

  • Kelles

Can't for the life of me figger it out...no wait, is it 1953?

  • butterbutter

That was clever. Let's ask Margaret if she knows.

  • aprilnyc

I would go by the helicopter design. But I don't know that much about helicopters.

    I guess 1930s

  • trusty32

I'm going to say that its '48...if that helicopter is a bell 47 - which it looks like with exception to the solid rear section - it was introduced in '46. Just a wild guess!

  • Eric

That helicopter is definitely from the 40s. I'm going to say 1947.

  • grandzu

    1945

  • Kevin Walsh

The East River Drive is there so it must be after 1934. I guess 1940
