NYC: AT&T Has Got This Phone Thing Figured Out

AT&T is claiming they've just completed a project that has improved wireless service in New York City—have you noticed a difference?

According to the AP, the company "has given more room on the airwaves to its 3G network, used by the iPhone and some other phones, in the boroughs of Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens." In doing so, service quality has allgedly steadily improved over the past six months—meaning less dropped calls and improved voice and data performance.

However, CNET reminds that earlier this month the company instituted a new pricing scheme, limiting the amount of data its users consume, and charging extra to those who go over their quotas (part of their "improvement" plan, no doubt). And the iPhone 4G is still flying off the shelves, which means AT&T will have more users to accommodate—so enjoy this new quality of service (if it even exists) while you can!

For those still not satisfied with AT&T, allegedly Verizon will get their shot at the iPhone in January.

AT&T dropped my calls from my home multiple times last night, and I'm not in a bad reception area.

I hope that Verizon iPhone rumor is true this time and I'm not alone. It's about time we have another carrier with the iPhone. In other countries you have a choice of 2 or 3 carriers if you want a iPhone.

I haven't really noticed a difference but I'll give it a few more days. There's still an awful dead zone about a mile long near Queens Plaza.

If you want to use an iPhone and don't want to jailbreak it for use with another carrier -- which is probably 99.5% of all iPhone owners -- then you have to be an AT&T customer, and they know they don't have to do jackshit to improve their service because you don't have a fuckin' choice.

I have an iPhone and 5-bar 3G speeds for data SUCKS. It sucked when my wife and I got our iPhones Dec. '08 and it sucks today. I'd love to see how iPhone-on-Verizon works.

7 seconds to get a dial tone down from 11 seconds

    is an improvement?

If their definition of "improved" is "it only took four tries to connect a call at the JFK baggage claim with 5 bars" then yes, it's improved.

    Jackasses.

What new quality of service? It switches me back to the old network as often as not and the bigger problem, dropped calls, is still an issue.
