Sean Bell Shooting Cop Sues Bell's Estate Over Back Injury

2010_06_sbell.jpg A police officer involved in the 2006 shooting of Sean Bell, the Queens man who was killed in a barrage of police bullets hours before his wedding, is now suing Bell's estate. The Post reports, "Police Officer Michael Carey's lawsuit says Bell was boozed-up when he got behind the wheel of the car after his bachelor party on Nov. 25, 2006, and also claims the doomed groom failed to wear glasses or contact lenses despite having poor eyesight."

According to the suit, "[Officer Carey] suffered serious leg injury when [Bell] crashed into the vehicle he was riding in before Officer Carey ever drew his gun and fired a shot." The lawsuit is part of a federal counter-claim "in response to a wrongful-death lawsuit being pursued by Bell's fiancée, Nicole Paultre Bell, against him and the other four cops involved." (The cops were acquitted in 2008 bench trial.) Earlier this month, Carey's lawyer argued that his client should not be part of the wrongful-death lawsuit because Carey, who fired three bullets at one of Bell's friends, believed he and other police officers were in danger.

In February, federal prosecutors declined to pursue a civil rights suit against the cop while Bell's family urged that the cops be taken off the police force.

Why shouldn't one sue a drunken drug dealer who has run them over or struck their vehicle causing injury?

  • fishfajitas

    Carey never fired his weapon.

He was just run over by a drunk prior, repeatedly.

And then the drunk was shot.

  • priors?

pls, every other week theres a story about a drunk cop running somebody down. you want to stick with that equivalence, should they be shot 51 times?

you cops trying to justify the inexcusible only make yourselves look worse.

heres a good video from the game, chk it out

He even looks like a thug in his family picture. His wife and baby are smiling and he looks like a ghetto homeboy. Good riddance to him.

I suppose you don't believe in trials and juries either right?

You probably miss the good old days were you and a couple of good old boys could just snatch ni66ers or as you call them "ghetto homeboys" out of their homes, beat them, castrate them, and lynch them, right? Would you have been the one inflicting the pain or just one of the perverse members of the crowd cheering as if it were a sporting event?

The only sick person with an obvious mental disorder is you, you racist pig.

You are the problem in this country. You and people like you who hate people just because of the color of their skin or nationality, or religion, or just because they're not exactly like you. You would have fit in perfectly in Nazi Germany. Is Hitler your idol?

The only satisfaction that I get is that that unjustified hatred you have inside of you is like a cancer slowly consuming you, making you more and more bitter and sapping the life out of you. It must kill you to know that the president of your country is black with a name like Obama, right? You probably can't watch the news without getting mad and cursing all these "homeboys" destroying your country, right? You hate your neighbors right? Wait till one of your offsprings bring one home and maybe even marry one, life is funny that way. See eventually all the hate and bitterness will undoubtedly lead to an early stroke or heart attack and the world will have one less racist to worry about.

I should hate you but that's too time consuming, takes too much energy, you and your kind aren't worth it, your really not that important. I would much rather be in a positive happy mind state than be in a cesspool of negativity, hatred and misery like you. All in all, I feel sorry for you. Hopefully you can cure yourself of that hate. I'll even give you clue in case you don't know where to start, it starts within. Usually that hate comes from self-hate, try to improve your yourself and your life and you'll see that you won't find the need to project your internal self-hate on others. If your personal and professional life were in order and were bringing you satisfaction I doubt you'd have the time or energy to hate others so much. I wish you luck, try to find that inner peace so you can enjoy life a little more.

    Good luck.

  • Officer Michael Carey, you are officially The World's Biggest Asshole

    Your welcome!

  • John L

This is despicable! Talk about adding insult to injury/murder.

So much for feeling any sense of guilt for senselessly killing this young man on the eve of his wedding.

New York's Finest at it again!

  • napalm

Everyday, the NYPD is digging its department deeper and deeper into a shit ditch. And this one from a moral point of view. Bad enough they are viewed negatively by most NYers, just imagine how they're viewed nationwide by civilians and other police dpts.

But hey, think about it, if the NYPD started holding their officers responsible and got rid of all the bad apples (filthy scum pigs), there'd probably be 1000 officers left on the force. But the filthy pig would still have their fans.

  • RightNYer

I don't think they're viewed negatively by "most" NYers. By most extreme liberal race baiters and criminals, yes, but not most New Yorkers.

  • Ph

What do liberals have to do with the police? You're a fucking hack.

  • RightNYer

Look at all the liberal idiots in this thread attacking the police and supporting a violent criminal who lived by the sword and justifiably died by the sword. Liberalism is a mental disorder.

  • unretrofiedforu

Look at this conservative boob who simply sticks to one side with an obvious lack of knowledge and common sense. Conservatism is a plague.

  • hotstepper

it's a counter-suit you ninnies. it is not like there is actually money in the "Sean Bell estate".

  • june

The original suit was not pursued by the DA. So why counter suit? To have his name removed from the original suit? Oh yea! Makes total sense!!!

  • jaycjay

"The original suit was not pursued by the DA. So why counter suit? To have his name removed from the original suit?"

No. What was dropped (by the federal prosecutor, not a DA) was a federal civil rights case. Part of your confusion probably comes from that being called a "suit" above; that's not normally what it's called. It had nothing to do with money, but could have ended with the cops being in federal prison on charges of violating the victims' civil rights.

The family's civil suit, demanding monetary damages, is still ongoing. "Civil suit" and "civil rights charges" are completely different things.

  • hotstepper

i'm having a hard time understanding what you are trying to say.

the officer, who was acquitted, is being sued by the family. this is a countersuit. they drop, he drops. easy.

  • wow. thats so fcked up.

the family of the man who was mistakeny shot to death by police is now being sued by one the cops.

you cant make this sh*t up.

  • RightNYer

There was no mistake. Bell was a violent criminal with a long record, his friends were violent criminals with records, and they tried to assault police with a deadly weapon AFTER threatening shortly before to get a gun. The only pity is that all of the occupants of the van didn't die.

  • napalm

Absolutely, because you were there, and you knew the victim and his friends personally and you know the backgrounds of all involved, and there is no possible way the police cops could've lied on the police reports, eventhough they were all drunk.

The only unfortunate event, is that your mother didn't die giving birth to you. Let alone yourself.
