Westchester police are on the lookout for two coyotes that mauled a 6-year-old girl in Rye. The girl was playing in her front yard with her sisters when the coyotes "pounced" from a bush, biting her on the shoulder, thigh and possibly ear and scratching her back.

The girl's sisters' screams got the attention of their mother, who then scared the coyotes. Rye Police Chief William Connors said, "Her injuries are not life-threatening but she sustained a number of significant bite wounds and lacerations... It seems that she was probably the smallest of the group and the attack seemed to focus solely on her." Police, who suspect the coyotes may be rabid, are warning residents with young children to be extra careful.

Police had managed to find a coyote at the country club and even fired at it, but the coyote got away. The Rye police will be setting up traps for the coyotes. A neighbor of the victim told the Journal News that he bought an air horn to use while walking his dog; after seeing a coyote the size of a German Shepard, he is now "totally paranoid."

In April, a coyote killed a toy poodle in Rye. In Manhattan, a coyotes were spotted around Manhattan earlier this year; one was captured in lower Manhattan.

Suburbs are dangerous because of coyotes and cougars!

  • Kelles

I guess saying "Maaaybe a dingo ate your baby??" is totally inappropriate here, eh?

Also found at the scene were several products made by the Acme Corporation, possibly used in the attack.

I see the above troll beat me to the story. Anyhow, everyone this is the isolated case of such an attack, the authorities end up killing thousands of animals which solves nothing. Look at Bloomberg who is gassing several thousand geese again. Last year, he had thousand of geese removed from parks and gassed. These geese don't migrate. the geese in the airports are from Canada. But instead of changing the habitat (which is cheaper), Bloomberg gasses the wrong geese.

This is an unfortunate tragedy, burt how the authorities responds to such isolated incidents resolves nothing and is cruel.

oh, so any other time it's the human's fault, but now you and the one-man Court of Felix declare this to be 'an isolated case'?

fuck you, the coyote was at fault, period. when they find it, they'll just relocate it to the catskills. no harm done except to the girl who was nearly fucking KILLED- but that means NOTHING to you, does it?

  • dadoc

This never would have happened if selfish, cruel people didn't buy their coyotes from breeders and coyote-mills. Then they train them to fight each other, and abandon them, who knows what trauma these poor coyotes went through in their puppyhood! They should have been brought up vegan and..... Oh, my mistake. Never mind :)

  • Global Wombat

The crotch slop of breeders deserves a good culling. Game on, coyotes!

before the usual suspects start saying dumb bullshit about animals not being innocent let me point out that this is once again humans fault because we have taken away the coyotes habitat and he has nowhere to go I mean duuuuh

  • resa

You haven't ever been West, have you. First of all, this is not their habitat..The coyote migrated out East from the West Coast and secondly, they did this through miles and miles and miles and miles and miles of uninhabited countryside.

  • HymietownHero

Actually, the coyote is one of those rare animals which thrive around human settlements. Before the mid-19th century they basically existed only in the western half of North America, but have rapidly adapted to changes caused by urbanization and human encroachment. Now they're pretty much all over the place.

  • Dead Himmler

You are an idiot. How are these coyotes innocent?? It is 100% their fault. In my opinion they should round up all the coyotes and exterminate them. This is the only way kids can play safely in their own yards. Longacre is right. There are plenty of other places these animals can go.

  • handsomedevil

maybe the people should just move

  • longacre

Most of this continent is still uninhabited. There's plenty of room for coyotes and people to live without bothering each other.

  • CR

Wow, really stupid comments on here. Coyote's don't say "Well, there goes the neighborhood, guess we'll just have to move." Many animals have been using the paths and trails for hundreds if not thousands of years - you throw a house, or a rerouted stream, or whatever on top of them, and the animals branch out to make new paths - sometime right into *gasp* human-inhabited neighborhoods.

Further proof of how little people actually understand the natural world.

Rye Patch has a bunch of coverage as well, and a link to a Coyote FAQ released by the Rye Police Department.

  • I was driving on Mamaroneck Ave toward White Plains last week around 8pm when what I thought was a large dog ran in front of my car. I then realized it was actually a coyote. Then about a half block down the road was an older woman walking her dog. It scared me a bit to think how easily she or her dog might be attacked. I guess this goes to show that coyotes must not be that uncommon in Westchester.

  • longacre

Don't worry, Janet Napolitano says this was the work of some disgruntled Tea Party coyotes, not part of a larger plot.
