Why the New M Train Is Snubbing 2nd Avenue

062510m.jpg A frustrated Gothamist commenter wants to know why the new M line isn't stopping at 2nd Avenue, particularly because "that station is always packed and now there's going to be even LESS service. Brutal." So we asked NYC Transit about the quirk, and a spokesman tells us, "If you look at the new map, you'll see the Chrystie St cut the M is taking to meet up with the 6th Ave corridor at Broadway/Lafayette. There's no other way for it to diverge from the Broadway Line (J,M,Z) corridor to merge with the 6th Ave (B,D,F—and now M) Line corridor. That, in a roundabout way, is why the M can't stop @ 2nd Ave." And that's one to grow on. Still sucks for the East Village, but at least it's not inexplicably brutal.

Which ever way you look at it , The whole change is just stupid . The new "M" will now service midtown, and loop back into Queens following the soon-to-be defunct "V" line out too Forest Hills. Why, When for those living close to the Middle Village looking to go too the Mall can take the Q38 too Woodhaven Blvd. in about twenty-five minutes ! So with that said, Why the hell would passengers use this new "M" out too Forest Hills ? They should have just let the "M" still a Brownie and run out too Bensonhurst during rush hours ! Simple ! Leaving the "G" to service Forest Hills Full time . (Which will now be even more crowded as a result of some people not paying attention to all those service change bulletins)

Shorter answer: The M can't stop at 2nd Avenue, because there is no 2nd Avenue station on the M line.

Funny thing about subways. They only load and unload passengers in stations.

    NOT Exactly,

can we just now say that that gothamist commenter is a moron.

    Theres no V, waaah,

the M is not in a brown circle anymore,

but since its now in an orange circle

my brain thinks it should stop on second avenue because its replacing the V with the orange circle right? waaaah!!!

It's actually pretty awesome for those of us on the M train. I can now speed straight to work. It's making Bushwick even more awesome to call home. In fact, there's an apt in my building available July 1 - 2 bed/2 full bath duplex for $1700, here's the CL ad - http://bit.ly/dvrLmS

Three cheers for the Orange M.

M line passengers who formerly transferred to the F at Delancey will now stay on the M as it continues uptown, so there is a good possibility that your whining commuter will actually have a better F train ride from 2nd Avenue.

  • mason55

Walking through the turnstyle in the morning at Delancey just as an M pulls in, when you need to get to the F, sucks. This will help.

The MTA's explanation makes sense, but the net effect of this flurry of changes is a reduction in service, due to budget cuts. Nearly everyone affected will be inconvenienced.

  • Gregoire

Although the V was certainly necesssary, you will be hard pressed to find anybody who will miss it.

  • mason55

Those of us who terminate at 2nd Ave will certainly miss the V train.

  • Tower18

I hear all these people saying it, but the V was always EMPTY during afternoon rush hour once it got to Broadway-Lafayette. I hear lots complaining, but I rarely saw lots riding.

I agree that the F was crowded, but keep in mind that the F will now be less crowded when it arrives at 2nd Ave because there will be fewer people transferring from the JMZ at Delancey-Essex, now that the M goes to Midtown.

  • ...thanks? That actually answers the question completely. I'm...just...thanks for the quick & well stated answer.

the answer is real simple, from delancy street, the M is on one level as Essex St and the F is on another as Delancy St, after delancy street on the M there is a stub tunnel that was unused for many years, the train goes through this previously abandoned tunnel and connects with the main F line at Broadway Lafayette.

    real simple, easy to understand.

The V at second avenue was terminating at the previously unused and abandoned middle tracks at the center of the station, the tracks south were so unused and uncared for that both those stub tunnels were for years long abandoned and used for homeless camps, and they actually built a giant metal wall closing off the south end of the station from the tunnel, yes that tunnel connects to Delancy street, but on the F line level not the M line.

so yes you can change the letter V to letter M but it doesnt mean that you can actually instantly make the tunnels reconfigure themselves.
