Fireworks Over Governors Island

Dan Dickinson caught video of some fireworks exploding over Governors Island last night. Does anyone know what they were for?

I was in the building across the street from Battery Park last night and it seemed they were coming from the park itself. There was a marathon or race of some type with the street blocked off earlier in the day. Maybe it was for that?

some rich guy or corporation just had a summer party.

it's pretty common when the weather gets warmer.

and, was it at 10pm? that's when I heard it. that's pretty late for a fireworks show.

and the SI yankees fireworks was on Mon or tues or something I think that's what I heard when I went to the game on Sun.

Maybe they were practicing for Saturday night's fireworks for Apples in the Stereo at the River to River festival?

  • jaydizz

Sorry, meant The Apples in Stereo.

I was on a booze cruise when this happened in the harbor and the fireworks came from the South Street Seaport. Not sure why.

I was on Water St + John hailing a cab when these went up. They were not from the Seaport, but further South, around Wall St. I could not see them directly (just the reflections on the side of the building), but it was definitely not from the Seaport.

I watched the fireworks from the new Brooklyn Bridge Park. They were definitely not over Governor's Island. They were coming from near the ferry dock/battery park/financial district.

    FUN!

to clarify - stadium is on northeast tip of SI - looking from manhattan, stadium is to the south of Governors Island

  • That's an interesting thought—but the video was shot from Jersey City and I just found out that Dan can't see SI from his vantage point.

I think I know the answer - from Manhattan, the fireworks appeared to be over Governors Island. In reality, they were post-game fireworks for SI Yankees game (they had special promotion last night). The SI Yanks stadium is on the tip of the island (next to the ferry dock).

  • Only problem with this theory: I filmed this video from Jersey City, looking east/southeast (you can see the Colgate Clock when some of the fireworks go off). I can see Brooklyn and Governor's Island (and a little bit of Battery Park) from my window, but Staten Island is definitely not in my field of view.

  • wow... so nice!
