Murder-Suicide Leaves Baby Motherless on Birthday

062410knife.jpg The winner of today's crazy horrible tabloid story has to be this account of a murder-suicide in Flushing, Queens, courtesy of the Daily News. Claudia Montoya, the 31-year-old mother of a 1-year-old baby girl, was brutally stabbed to death in her home yesterday by her long-suffering jealous admirer, who then committed suicide by lying down on the 7 train tracks at the Hunters Point station. Montoya was found around 7:50 a.m. after neighbors became alarmed by a powerful odor of gas emanating from the apartment, which she shared with her boyfriend, the baby's father. Her two Yorkshire terriers were also found dead inside, presumably from the gas.

The murderer, Wilmer Castano, 27, "was in love with Claudia, but she told him it was just a friendship," Montoya's sister Stephanie Galeano tells the News. "He must have been very angry. He stabbed her 17 times." After murdering Montoya, Castano stole her Mercedes SUV and tried to kill himself by driving into Flushing Bay. But when that didn't work, he opted for suicide by subway. Fortunately, Montoya's daughter Sophia was not in the apartment at the time. Today happens to be her first birthday, and Montoya's sister says they were planning on having a pool party to celebrate. Sad enough for you?

Very sad. Mental illness is unfortunate, and it's even worse that this resulted in 2 lives lost and a child orphaned.

You can say that again. Oh wait, you did.

Furthermore. All of G'mist's Hispanic murder stories seem to feature an over the top quality. Like West Side Story, but nobody dances or sings. Work on that. Try reporting on an Hispanic who DID NOT get murdered immediately after calling his mother and telling her he loved her.

Sad and disgusting. Too bad the cowardly monster that did this took his own worthless life before he could face the consequences. Very sad.

Judging by the names, I assume the victim is a minority. Which will attract bloggers like inoyourider and several others to gain pleasure and make their usual "if the victim is a minority then why care" comments..

Why aren't you defending the stalker?

Aren't those the type of you identify with?

Glad he saved the world the trouble and killed himself.

And that the daughter wasn't home to see it be injured from the gas.

Also glad the victim had a sister...at least that baby girl will have someone to care for her.

I have to disagree, I'm glad he took his life, I'm sick of people like this, doing sh!t like this, and being able to get off due to their "mental illness plea" where we'll then have to pay to keep him alive and on meds for the rest of his life, and pray he doesn't do something again... good riddance.

    Train job.

This is why we have The Post.

Are you kidding with the "long suffering jealous admirer" line? Quit making him sound like a victim. He was a psychotic stalker-murderer who couldn't cope with basic reality.

Obivously this is a terrible tragedy, but why did she keep him around to do errands? If he professed his feelings for her, and she wasn't having it, best to cut the cord completely instead of letting the guy hang around doing stuff for her. Doesn't mean she deserved it, but it probably would have helped if he had no contact with her; in his sick mind, she was probably encouraging him by having him do errands and such.

Have you ever met a woman before?

  • s.g.

It's not a Gothamist violence against women post without some good old-fashioned victim-blaming!

  • laisla

Right? It only took until post 2 for victim-blaming! Not surprising but oh so disgusting.

  • maryjr

I was on that train. They evacuated us. Not pretty.
