Guess The Year: A & P in Manhattan

groceryyear.jpg

We stumbled across this old photograph of an A & P in Manhattan (just look at those prices, and fonts!)—can you guess what year it was taken in? We'll post the answer here at the end of the day.

UPDATE: While some of you proved you know how to use the Google Machine (ie: cheat), the winner today didn't (we're pretty sure). Congrats SFNYgirl! This photo of the A & P (or Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co.) was taken at 246 Third Avenue in Manhattan on March 16th, 1936 (by Berenice Abbott). It's now the home of Gramercy Bagels.

Stayed tuned for more, less search-able, Guess The Year posts! Today's prize: bragging rights.

Doesn't look like there's any rationing in effect, so that puts the WWII years out of the running, and the '50s are too late. It's probably sometime in the '30s... I'll guess 1937.

The Kate Smith endorsement along with the absence of wartime or WPA advertising puts this at 1936-1941, probably '36.
