More Danger Lurking At Brooklyn Bridge Park

Now that those pesky metal orbs that were burning children are out of commission at Brooklyn Bridge Park, parents are piping up about their travel perils to the park's Pier 6.

According to some parents who spoke to the Daily News, getting to the park is scary—one mom told them, "crossing over here with little kids; it's just unsafe."

Those visiting the park often have to cross an on-ramp to the BQE, where cars are allowed to make right turns on red, and some areas don't even have pedestrian crosswalks. Now the Brooklyn Bridge Park Defense Fund has written a letter to the Department of Transportation asking to fix the problem by installing new traffic signs and signals.

Even those in cars are concerned that the area is just an accident waiting to happen. So with that, Councilman Brad Lander (D-Park Slope) says: "It's just a place that never had a lot of pedestrians. Now it has thousands of pedestrians and we haven't yet made any changes to accomodate them... We need them fast." Alas, no word on why this wasn't fixed before the park opened.

The only spot which is actually dangerous is the BQE onramp on the north side of Atlantic (before you go under the BQE). Cars can turn in all the way from the other side of the road and there is no signage or street lights.

Just use the south side (near LICH) of Atlantic until the lights/signs are fixed. Problem solved.

The approach from Atlantic Ave is not great, but if you don't have your head stuck in your blackberry/iPhone while your kids run wild, it's no worse than crossing any other major intersection.

I second that - walk on the south side of the street if that on ramp is so frightening.

All the park needs now are some rattlesnakes

    Ha!

That approach to the park from Atlantic Avenue is NOT safe. I cannot understand why this wasn't addressed before they opened the park. Hopefully, it will be before someone is injured. This part of Atlantic Avenue is right by the BQE on ramp with vehicles approaching from all directions and is not conducive to foot traffic.

FYI- No, I'm not a parent. Yes, I'm a lifelong Brooklynite. This is simply a matter of common sense.

If you're coming from the Heights/DUMBO/etc., just hang a right on Jouralemon St and walk down to Furman. As nutty as that street can be, it's a lot safer than Atlantic Avenue.

The problem is there's NO way to cross the street, as traffic basically does not stop. There is no crosswalk or pedestrian light. and when there is a red light the traffic coming off the BQE can turn right. So to cross you have to just try to time it and hope anyone coming will decide to stop. not really a huge problem for an adult but if you have pokey little kids or old folks not too easy or enjoyable i imagine.

  • Adults should be CROSSING their children --

I don't even understand why this is an issue....

The problem is that these people don't have a hold on their fu*ing children ... A child should always be holding their parents hand when they're crossing a street.. And it's up to the parent to say "No, wait!" if it's not safe to go. The real issue here is that these people spoil the shi* outta their kids and as a result, the little ones don't listen to a peep outta the adults mouth. ... And then, to make it 100x worse...when their kids DO run into the street, instead of smacking the isH outta them they go turn to websites and read up on alternative discipline methods and later have a mild mannered 'discussion' over why it's dangerous.

Get a hold of your kids.. Case closed.

  • That was a fail.

Here's a solution: don't go to the park if it's going to kill you or your kiddies. Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth.

    Whiney bunch of b***hes.

Another moron heard from! If risking your life to get there is the price to enjoy it, keep your f'ing park. OR....think the shit through before you rush through a design that only puts another feather in Bloomburg's hat.

Most places in the US allow right turns on red, have street level on-ramps, AND have drivers who are far less accustomed to watching for pedestrians yet somehow people survive and still manage to go to the park in the process. Yet in Brownstone Brooklyn entitlement land, god forbid little Jaden and Dakota have to cross the street without exercising a bit of common sense. I would hardly call waiting for traffic to pass and then proceeding to cross the road "risking one's life". We are truly f**ked when this generation full of coddled wimps is trying to run this country.

  • MT

No. Someone who doesn't need to be coddled every step of the way. These people should consider themselves lucky they got this park in the first place, but no. Everyone in this town needs something to complain about. These are the same people who complained about putting a carousel in this park. Maybe they should come back when they have a real problem.

Christ on a cracker, you live in a city! Do you want to cross the mean old street on a cloud attended by unicorns?

  • justthinkin

Yeah, I live in a city. New York to be exact. Not Beirut. Go see the corner in question before making asinine statements.

"Alas, no word on why this wasn't fixed before the park opened."

You're expecting forethought from city employees/ government?

  • duckumu

i agree they need to get rid of that turn-on-right sign at the intersection of atlantic and columbia. that was fine when there was no park, but it's not appropriate anymore. i was at that intersection a few weeks ago and it was awkward negotiating the street crossing with cars that were turning on red.
