Still Safe To Eat Shrimp In NYC

62310shrimp.jpg The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico continues to wreak havoc upon wildlife, but news comes today that NYers won't have to worry about one comfort creature disappearing from their menus: shrimp. Despite concerns that the oil spill may hurt America's shrimp industry, it turns out that the vast majority of shrimp in NYC is imported from overseas.

According to the Daily News, only seven percent of all shrimp consumed in the U.S. comes from the Gulf. Shrimp wholesalers get most of their product from Mexico, Panama, Ecuador and parts of Asia. Even so, tests are currently being done on the Gulf's soil, water and the shrimp themselves to ensure no toxic seafood is shipped to stores. The spill has destroyed shrimping in the Gulf: "The supply has diminished down to nothing from down in the gulf, which has caused a spike in prices," said Andrew Szamborski, president of North Rip Trading.

Below, you can see a video of Elvis Presley performing one of his strangest songs, "Song of the Shrimp," sung partially from the perspective of a shrimp, from the movie Girls Girls Girls.
