Spirit Airlines Ad Plays BP Oil Spill for Laughs

062210spirit.jpg

Well, the oil in the Gulf is already on its way to Pensacola and Cuba, and who knows, maybe Scotland? But Spirit Airlines wants you to know there's a different kind of oil in Ft. Lauderdale. (That is, until the spill hits the Loop Current.) Ads on their website invite travelers to check out the (tanning) oil on beaches in Atlantic City, San Juan and Cancun for $50 off! All while poking a little harmless fun at a horrific environmental catastrophe. Did the fees from carry on luggage pay for that brilliant ad campaign, or did their marketing department just hire Tony Hayward? [Via Deadspin]

This from the same idiot airline who canceled flights (because of the strike) without informing customers (such as me) who showed up at the airport to find out there was no flight.

  • josegarcia

beyond tasteless when you think about people's livelihoods being devastated. not to mention the sea life. scum bags.

    Schmucks

"did their marketing department just hire Tony Hayward?"

No, their marketing department hired someone smart enough to know that getting media outlets to run your ads for free is a win.

  • robingee

Still, even though they say any publicity is good, I don't believe it. This will hurt them.

  • longacre

It's an ad for flights to Florida beaches, most of which is oil-free. The tourism business in the whole Gulf area is getting killed when in fact the vast majority of beaches are clean.

  • matty

    Well that's pretty tasteless.

  • SeaKris

    Spirit Airlines is pretty tasteless...

Do a Google search of complaints about their service... You'll be amazed. I flew on them once and never will again. Long story short, their shoddy maintenance caused a delay and thus I missed my connection to my next flight. They gave me vouchers for everything but a ride back to the airport the next morning. After spending $85 on a cab from the hotel THEY put me at, it took me SEVEN MONTHS of badgering them (almost daily at the end) to get reimbursed.

I wouldn't fly on them if someone paid me to fly.

  • Sir Bonkers

I flew with them last summer and will be doing so this summer. Had no problems with their service. Didn't need to check my bags, all carry-on. Got to my destination without a hitch. Their tickets are cheap so i don't expect much from them.

  • longacre

Shoddy maintenance would be if the plane broke in the air and you died. Taking a delay on the ground due to a mechanical problem is a good thing and can happen to any plane.

  • SeaKris

Oh... Also, the mechanical problem was that the APU that was powering the aircraft on the ground conked out, then they went through SIX other units and none would work... FIVE of which had the wrong adapter, the last just being broken. That's pretty reputable, eh? Not even having an auxiliary power unit for an aircraft considering you have multiple jets at a time flying in and out of this airport? Nice.

  • longacre

    Fair enough, that sucks.

  • CR

Hey that sucks but it sounds like every other airline out there...

  • SeaKris

No... Alaska Airline lost a piece of my luggage once... I brought my receipt for the toiletry items that I had to buy because they were in my bag and they cut me a check right on the spot. Like I said, all the issues with Spirit was a long story... That was just ONE part of it... There were really about 6 separate complaints, that one was just the biggest.

@longacre - Really? Obviously I didn't die, but that doesn't make them a good airline. I travel at least WEEKLY for my job and even just the general manner in which Spirit Airlines speaks to people, whether in person or on the phone, is abysmal. (And that is from experience a week before my flight when I had to go pay for my bags because their online system was down *Which it always is... Because you have to pay more if you wait to pay on the day of the flight... That is how they get you to pay the higher price... The internet option is always down.*, dealing with the the day of the flight, dealing with them once my flight was missed, etc, etc. You can fly them if you want... They could be FREE and I wouldn't give them my business or any business from my company.
