PA Cops Can Claim Overtime While Suspended

062110overtime.jpg Thanks to a bizarre union contract rule, Port Authority cops can actually collect overtime pay if they have been suspended for misconduct. According to the Post, the benefits apply to officers suspended for misconduct with pay, and later cleared. If no formal charges are filed within 120 days, the officer can claim overtime. And they wonder why income spending is up...

The contract between the Port Authority and the Port Authority Police Police Benevolent Association expired in January, but terms of that contract remain in effect while the two parties try to figure out a new deal. A Port Authority spokesman says they hope the contract "continues to protect public safety while also protecting public money for decades to come." They're trying to eliminate the overtime provision, but PA PBA president Paul Nunziato accuses the PA of dragging their feet and leaving many officers suspended without pay while resolving disciplinary cases. He said of the provision, "I will bargain to keep it." Another rule he may bargain to keep is getting a day off after donating blood. And hey, it's not too late to add a spit-take provision!

Not a day off. The rest of the day, if they donate blood during a shift. Instead of taking an hour of excused time, or whatever it might take, to donate blood they are given the remainder of the shift. So really in most cases it's probably only a couple of hours.

Still probably not necessary, but that's the accurate explanation.
