Johan Santana really only made one mistake, but it cost him the game. In the third inning, Brett Gardner led off with a single and Derek Jeter reached on an infield single that David Wright couldn’t get a good grip on. Nick Swisher then surprised everyone with a push bunt to the right side that resulted in a collision between Santana and Ruben Tejada at first and a dropped ball making everyone safe. Betrayed by his defense, Santana then grooved a fastball right down the pipe that Mark Teixeira deposited into the seats in left for a grand slam.
That was it for the offense for both clubs and Mariano Rivera worked a perfect ninth for the Yankees. The win and a loss by Tampa mean the Yankees are alone in first place. The loss and a win by Atlanta, drops the Mets 2-1/2 games out of first.
