Fake Training Bomb Flown From Israel To JFK With No Problem

061810bomb.jpg A realistic-looking but harmless plastic explosive device wound up on an El Al flight from Israel to JFK Airport after it was accidentally left on board by security forces who were using it for training. According to a vague report from NBC New York, the fake bomb made it all the way to JFK, where somebody brought it over to the Israeli Consulate in Manhattan. But they didn't want that poor lonely fake bomb, either.

The consulate tried to send it back to Israel, delivering it to JFK, where it sat in somebody's office for a few days. Finally the fake bomb's owner was located in Israel! But when the fake bomb's custodian finally tried to bring it back on an El Al flight, it at last caught the attention of JFK security, and Port Authority and NY police were called to investigate. Good to know they're on top of fake weapons over there, at least.

How could that happen? Maybe because not being bombs (there were, according to the article, more than one) no bomb-detection procedure would find them. From the most modern "sniffer" technology to well-trained dogs, they find bombs, not things that look like they could be bombs. And, having been transported in a diplomatic pouch, no airport security personnel would have seen them.

Big deal. Security procedures failed to detect... nothing.
