Councilman Charles Barron's Freedom Party Bid For Governor

2010_06_freedomparty.jpgOutspoken City Councilman Charles Barron (D-Brooklyn) officially kicked off his "protest" run for governor yesterday, by announcing the formation of the Freedom Party, an all-black party. Noting how Cuomo picked a white running mate and how the other state office nominees are white, the Daily News reports that Barron said, "Don't call us racists when we point out racism. This was supposed to be the post-racial society. Somebody should have told that to the New York State Democratic Party."

Barron also repeated his refrain, "The Democratic Party has taken us for granted," and said, "It's time for us to be for us. It's time for us to be a self-determining people." (Video after the jump.) He told the Observer, "Today is a historic moment for us Malcom X called for an independent party. Marcus Garvey called for an independent party, and the time is ripe for that right now.. Most of the candidates like Michael Bloomberg will not be honest in saying that he is the candidate of rich, white men. He won’t say that. I’ll say that I love black people and while people. I’m going to serve all the people, I’m really going to look out for black people who have been wronged for so long."

Barron must get 15,000 signatures in order to appear on the ballot this fall; according to the News, he says the Freedom Party will do that and he wants "to get 50,000 votes for governor - giving it status as a major party for the next four years."

Is this the same bunch of ignorant dopes who were protesting The Scottsboro Boys outside the theater without ever having seen the show? Now THERE'S a party destined for greatness. NOT.

So much information in these comments.

    (1) Felix the Cat- Your name is funny! But, the Freedom Party is running a Latino candidate. Ramon Jimenez is a very experienced activist and Latino. He is running for Attorney General and would have Wall Street quaking in the shiny shoes.

    (2) Charles Barron will never sell out the community for 30 pieces of silver for any bureaucratic deal. Yes, Christine Quinn did that. But Charles is 60 years old and never done anything like that. Furthermore, the Freedom Party does NOT accept contributions from corporations, they are so pure. What other party can say that? Who really have that much support from people and community based orgs? What other party could have gotten enough petitions to get on the ballot without any support from the Democratic Party (i.e. Working Families sellouts)?

    (3) It is in the interest of working class white people to support Charles Barron and the Freedom Party. Many of us are teachers, social workers and health care educators. We are also screwed over by corporations, the Democratic Party bureaucrats, terrible schools for our children, the closing of hospitals, the incompetent MTA, and the empowerment of Wall Street. Also, a black & Latino-based party led by community-grassroots folks would be much less likely to sell out, esp. led by experienced people who have never sold out.

Many working class white folks strongly support Charles Barron, volunteer for the Freedom Party, and finally have a shred of hope for NYC and NYS government-including this white person.

  • wow 14th street

He is anti-white people especially Jews so.. whatever!

He gave up his African robes he used to wear years ago maybe he has retained a little lapel button with the usual

    invented African colors.

I guess he will as usual get nowhere but will blame

"the Man" for all societies ills like in the 1970's.

Thank God, finally someone has man up, and set up, a new community empowerment party. I've been waiting for this for a long time.

It's time to kick some do nothings for the community in the behind. Thank you Mr. Barron and others for doing this now. So let's get this party started.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

I agree with you but the problem is that Barron can sell out just as Al Sharpton does. Al Sharpton stirs up the people (ex. NY Post) and then gets paid to go away and then leaves the people hanging. Also Leonora Fulani, Independence Party, was on the steps of City Hall with Anthoy WEiner and stated that she would refused Bloomberg on her party ballot and would contact the republican party to refuse him as well due to Bloomberg overturning term limits. yet she changed her tune as soon as Bloomberg send her the check and she is now holding signs made by "him" at the Charter Commission to advocate for nonpartison election. She is doing this for Bloomberg who wants to open politics to more of his BUSINESS friends who will push finance their candidates.

They're all good for nothing. I think if you take every New York politician and mixed them in together you wouldn't be able to make one decent human being. Some are worst than others but overall they're all just a bunch of self-serving opportunists.

I also supported financially and my time to the Working Family Party but dump them after they endorsed Christine Quinn when there was a viable candidate running against her. Now this party will most likely lose its ballot line since Cuomo won't run on theirs. Working Family ran power from the people and betrayed us and Now I and many won't support them any longer.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

I can't disagree with that, I wish it wasn't true but it is. Which is why I think Barron will drop this campaign as soon As Cuomo "offers" him something.

Don't know if I'll vote for him but I like what he's doing. I don't really appreciate the black/white thing but I think a lot of the black Democrats saw what the party did to Paterson and took it as an insult. I personally hated the way the Democrats anointed Cuomo as their leader and totally destroyed Paterson because he didn't bow down to their king. They destroyed one of their own longstanding members to clear the way for Cuomo.

Baron is not trying to win he just wants to go against the Democratic's King Cuomo and I'm glad he's doing it.

  • ANGRYGOD11

You chose to ignore Paterson is a bad governor surrounded by a lousy staff often facing charges. Paterson failed to lead by example in ethics nor fiscally by not cutting his staff's size and paychecks while the worst New York State budget crisis in our lifetime is taking place. I really could go on and on, but you know he stinks.

Why shouldn't he be held accountable by his own party?

  • John L

I'm not a Paterson supporter but I'm not against him either, in fact before he became Governor I didn't even know enough about him to have an opinion on him. However I was just willing to give him a chance and see what he can do for the State of New York. I must say though that at this point I feel sorry for the man. Of course I expected the state's Republicans to go against him, that's their job but the state's Democrats should be ashamed. The Democrats are on a mission to destroy one of their own simply because he wouldn't bow down to their anointed leader, Andrew Cuomo. Cuomo was hand picked by them to be the next governor of this state by the party's leaders and when Paterson said he would run against him they completely turned on him.

First they tried to persuade him not to run, then they tried to force him to resign and now they're just out to make him look as incompetent as possible. I feel for Paterson, he doesn't seem like a bad person and certainly doesn't deserve to be betrayed like this by his own party. First they ridiculed him and told him he couldn't raise the funds to run, but so what if he wants to ruin with only a thousand dollar war chest shouldn't he be allowed to? But if he caught steam and was able to raise some money that would take away from their candidate's war chest and they couldn't allow that. Then that whole witness tampering nonsense was blown out of proportion to try to make him step down, why aren't they talking about it anymore? Because it was a non-issue to begin with. If he would have been in good standing with the party they would have backed him up and it wouldn't have gotten the attention it got in the first place. In fact the person that Cuomo picked to head the investigation has yet to even interview him about the charges. Now the democrats are stalling on this budget just to make him look as incompetent as possible, plain and simple. This anti-Paterson agenda is coming all the way from the White House because he didn't do as they said and appoint Caroline Kennedy to Hillary Clinton's old post. Instead he went with his choice, Kirsten Gillibrand, who in turn was among the first to call for Paterson's resignation, how's that for a thank you note? There was no way she would do that without the party's approval and most likely did it at their request.

The democratic party should be ashamed at what they have done to Paterson and we should be appalled that they are playing politics with this state's budget.

I'm registered as an independent but consider myself a democrat and I do not appreciate these hardball tactics they are playing. I don't like not being given a choice between Cuomo and whomever chooses to run against him. I think the party is doing itself a disservice by ramming Andrew Cuomo down our throats like this. Let them all run and may the best man or woman win on their laurels, not by destroying the competition.

Let me make this clear I'm not defending Paterson, I'm defending democracy.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Barron should have included the Latinos because there is less latinos in citywide positions.

  • JMH

If it's a post-racial society, shouldn't Cuomo be free to pick whomever he considers to be the best choice to be his running mate, without regard for that person's race? You're the one who's (once again) making it about race rather than about qualifications.

  • bashmentgirl

    He's has my vote !!!b

  • Splicer

Just don't whine like a little cur when you don't win.
