Mohegan Sun Received $54 Million In Stimulus Money

2010_06_mohegansun.jpg Did you know that the owners of a billion dollar-grossing casino needed federal stimulus money? According to ABC News, Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) helped support the measure which will benefit the "politically well-connected Mohegan Indian tribe."

Mohegan Sun's 2009 revenue was over $1.3 billion Even though each tribe member gets a share of the profit, the tribe said the take was "'less than $30,000' per capita per year." ABC News explains, "The stimulus money is a loan from a U.S. Department of Agriculture rural development program that is meant to help communities of less than 20,000 people that have been 'unable to obtain other credit at reasonable rates and terms and are unable to finance the proposed project from their own resources.'" The USDA said the loans will help "create an estimated 1,200 jobs for this shovel-ready project" of building a community center and that construction started before the downturn—thus it's just jumpstarting things.

The Mohegan tribe pointed out that six of Connecticut's seven House members supported the funds. Dodd's communications director said, "Senator Dodd supported this project in the same manner and for the same reasons he supports federal assistance for other Connecticut projects - creating and preserving local jobs. The only factor that mattered in Dodd's support of these loans was job creation and economic recovery in Connecticut." Lieberman's spokesperson said something similar. However, ABC News notes that a former Dodd aide is now "Chief of Staff for External and Governmental Affairs for the tribe."

  • soooooo.........obtaining US passports and traveling as an american = threat and disgrace to their culture,

taking 54 million dollars in US currency is perfectly okay.

    i see.

How the fuck does Chris Dodd still have a job? Thank the lord he's resigning, cause he is a BOOB of the tallest order.

Stimulus, in any form, is artificially propping up businesses that deserve to fail. Quit all these fucking bailouts, and give citizens back their tax money.

  • Think2wice

Mohegans, almost ethnically cleansed...to pocketing congressman. This reeks and yet it rocks.

BTW a word from the brown-man to the red-man. Stop calling yourselves or letting yourselves be called "Indians".

This is not ideal, but if they qualify for the program then they qualify. It doesn't seem right to discriminate against a community because their main industry is a casino, unless Congress specified that in the law that was passed. That doesn't appear to be the case.

It is still just a loan, after all. We gave loans to GM and Chrysler, not to mention TARP, and they were much, much larger (and have been largely repaid).

FWIW, they reported $4.4 million profit in 1Q10 (fiscal). They had reported losses in 2009.

    It's a LOAN

"The stimulus money is a loan from a U.S. Department of Agriculture rural development program that is meant to help communities of less than 20,000 people that have been "unable to obtain other credit at reasonable rates and terms and are unable to finance the proposed project from their own resources."

Chris Dodd aka Chief Shitting Bull.

  • This is bullshit.

Mohegan Sun does not need $54 billion. They're one of the biggest moneymakers in Connecticut.

The catch? They don't pay taxes. Both they and Foxwoods claim to be sovereign nations. So they can evade both Connecticut gambling laws and tax laws. Instead, they pay some percentage of their slot machine revenue, which is a tiny, tiny fraction of their profits.

And despite being sovereign nations and not paying taxes, these casinos use Connecticut resources. They use local towns' police whenever they need someone arrested on their reservation. They use local fire units. Their workers go to local schools. But they don't pay one dime in local taxes. The local taxpayers have to pay for these multimillion dollar casinos scamming the system.

They create jobs. But they create low-paying jobs. Very few of these jobs are worked by people from Connecticut. Instead, immigrants from Eastern Europe and Asia have immigrated to southeastern Connecticut. This has created a vast disparity of wealth in the region.

I know. I grew up ten miles from Mohegan Sun. My parents live a mile from Foxwoods.

The fact is that stimulus money, if it is to be used properly, should be sent to American institutions. Not to Indian reservations that claim to be sovereign nations. Not to casino owners who pay off corrupt politicians. But I guess that's the nature of corruption.

Proximity is not a substitute for knowledge. MS pays 25% of slot revenue to the state. Revenue >> profits.

For the month of May alone, MS paid $16 million in tax, on $65 million in revenue.

The tribe has their own police and fire departments. They work with Montville and both companies provide mutual aid.

While the tribe does not pay local taxes, they do provide $500,000 per year (found this in a 2002 story.. might have changed by now). They have also provided spot funding for various projects. It's unclear what their property tax would be.

    Million, not billion.

  • John Clavis

Stimulus is stimulus. Corruption is corruption. And if you want real Orwellian thinking, how about Joe Barton apologizing to the BP CEO? LOL!

    Keep drinking the Kool Aid.

    From your mom?

Has Olbermann ever selected Chris Dodd as his "worst person in the world?" Because he earns that tag at least once a month.

  • EastRiver

I think Worst Person is permanently reserved for Bill O'Reilly - unless someone else from Fox did something of note that day.

  • EastRiver

The Mohegan tribe pointed out that six of Connecticut's seven House members supported the funds.

First, that it is was supported doesn't mean it's right. More important, Connecticut only has five Congressional districts. I hope they were adding the five House members to the state's two Senators. Or maybe they just bought more with their casino haul.

  • inoyourider

In the original article it says Congressional delegation.

"The whole Connecticut delegation, I think aside from [Rep.] Jim Himes, who was traveling, sent a letter in support."

The overall support may not mean much, but the fact that Chris Dodd was given star billing is telling about the motives of the articles write.

  • ides_of_march

"Stimulus" is just an Orwellian euphemism for corruption.
