NJ State Trooper Found Shot To Death On GSP

2010_06_gspsuic.jpg A NJ State Trooper was found fatally shot in his patrol car earlier this morning on the Garden State Parkway. NJ.com reports, "an officer came upon a trooper car at about 7:30 a.m. on the exit ramp from the parkway to Route 34 south [near Wall Township]. A trooper was found unresponsive in the car, officials said." The State Police said, "Some irresponsible news outlets have published unconfirmed reports of manhunts and gunfights. This information is not correct. At this point, we are not looking for any additional vehicles or suspects in connection with the investigation." CBS 2 sources say it may have been a suicide.

"CBS 2 sources say it may have been a suicide."

The fact that they are "not looking for any additional vehicles or suspects in connection with the investigation" does imply that.

Interesting that the CBS 2 story that says that has a photo of the trooper's car with the caption still reading "A New Jersey state trooper was shot Wednesday morning in a shootout along the Garden State Parkway in Wall, N.J."

I guess they were originally one of those "irresponsible news outlets".

@r1b2 you're lucky, you haven't dealt with a NYPD officer. But RIP

Thank god Jaya did not write this story. I can only imagine what the headline would read. "One less cop" sound like something Jaya would write.

oh be quiet, Truc. This is a sad story, so why don't you take your pettiness elsewhere.

There are a few people who post here who I'm sure are smiling that this Trooper is dead. It's a very sad commentary. Condolances to his family.

I know there's a lot of police-bashing in Gothamist comments, and much of it is unfortunately the response to reports of abuses by police, but make no mistake, it is NEVER good to strike out at police. This is a thankless job, most police do very good work and are genuinely there to protect us and our families and our loved ones and our property and our enjoyment of daily life, and this kind of news gets me really angry. My thoughts go out to the family of this officer.

A very sad story. I think Gothamist commenters, on the whole, are respectful to cops (and most folks) who suffer a tragedy such as this. It's when cops abuse their position and power that they are rightly subject to criticism.

Hardly thankless, most police are very well paid and have retirement and pension plans that are the envy of public and private employees alike. And most will never discharge their guns during their entire careers. They may have a difficult job at times - but hardly thankless.

    Agreed.
