Take That, ESB: Intrepid Will Honor Mother Teresa

The USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum will go where the Empire State Building fears to tread on August 26th, lighting up blue and white in honor of Mother Teresa's 100th birthday. The museum's executive director, Susan Marenoff, told the Post, "We'd be thrilled to represent what Mother Teresa has done in terms of public service. We are the essence of public service. We give back every day." However, she had no harsh words for Empire State Building owner Andrew Malkin, who says the building doesn't honor religious figures with its lights. "Every venue has the right to decide what is appropriate for them. I think it is appropriate and very relevant for us."

Malkin has been slammed by religious authorities and politicians for refusing to honor the late nun, and was called a hypocrite by City Council speaker Christine Quinn for supporting her idea for New Yorkers to light their windows in Teresa's honor. At press time, 476 had joined Quinn's Facebook group "I am putting a light in my window for Mother Teresa on August 26th." Quinn said, "We're not going to let one individual's rejection of that stand in the way of the rest of the city embracing this message."

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz has agreed to light up Borough Hall in honor of Mother Teresa, and Mayor Bloomberg has joined in on her plans to make the day a citywide day of service. She said of Malkin, "It's unfortunate. He just doesn't get it." Hitchens must have gotten to him.

"Hi, Marty? Hey, I was wondering if you'd light up Borough Hall in honor of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. He helped a lot of people through some hard times... Oh. Controversial religious figure. Yeah, I understand."

i think mother teresa was a scam artist hypocrite!

and even then i dont dont she would like her name associated with a warship,

  • ozik

Maybe her heaven-ghost will think "warship" is a typo.

  • thefacts

    "It's fairly common knowledge."

Yes, among whack jobs and right-wing haters like Chris Hitchens.

Of course, you know much more than the Noble Peace Prize Committee, don't you?

  • potsmoker

its well documented that she prolonged the suffering of the poor in some crazy catholic fetish pain fantasy that suffering was some gift from god that prayer and willpower would overcome. of all the MILLIONS and probably BILLIONS collected in her name she forced her nuns to beg for charity, excess food/product was not stored, needles were reused in some sort of risk that frugality was better than medical safety, the only thing that was never tossed in the name of keeping the appearance of poverty was COLD HARD CASH! were are all the homes, schools, sanitation and medical services that supposedly HELP the poor of india, NONE EXIST. they only help the poor by keeping them poor and maybe doling out a dollop of slop 3 times a day.

  • thefacts

Why are you shouting?? It says a lot about your rationality.

Show me links to this "well-documented"evidence.

Btw, I happened to be a volunteer at two of her homeless shelters for people with AIDS for six months. Your comments are so wrong, I am not even going to refute them.

The love and care the men experienced from her nuns were far greater than that at the secular place I also volunteered at, Bailey House. In fact, I only spent two days at the secular place because it was so uncaring and lacking in love to the afflicted.

So, I ask you again, "You know more about her than the Noble Peace Prize Committee did? Were they duped? Are you so knowledgeable about her"

Or are you just another anonymous internet hater with more bile than knowledge?

please send me documentation of how mother teresa actually helped the poor and afflicted in India, and provided homes, shelter, sanitation, education, and madical care.

that old biyotcch just scammed millions because she or her handlers were PR geniuses, i know for a fact that she is burning in hell for her crimes against humanity.

its says something about your thinking,

the idea that typing in ALL CAPS is SHOUTING is kind of childish. i used to type everything in all CAPS because

    ITS ACTUALLY EASIER TO READ.

but sometimes people use CAPS instead of scripting BOLD html commands into their comments, its to STRESS something that might be IMPORTANT so you read it and say this is the IMPORTANT PART,

i checked Guidestar, wow, bailey house has a good proportion

of money in and money out and only lists 5 individuals making over 50K, none making more than 99K,

but a dude, thats USA nyc bronx, whatever,

there are no charity rules in India, thats where the scandals are and thats where the scandalous accusations originate from.

Though journalists like Christopher Hitchens and Tariq Aziz have called her motives into question, there's no denying that she ministered to the poor, sick and dying in the hellholes of the world for 45 years, and must be considered a great humanitarian, despite the foibles some perceive.

I'm sure she could care less, if she were alive, that the Empire State Building were lit blue and white.

She could care less, but I sure can't. She's dead. Life is for us still living. Move on.

  • ozik

Why are these government and government funded institutions honoring a religious figure, and one who was pretty awful at that?

  • Mark

Everyone does know that Mother Theresa was actually not a very good person and contributed a lot of crap to this world on top of being a hypocrite? It's fairly common knowledge.

  • longacre

A lot of folks we celebrate holidays for had bad sides that no one talks about.

Where's your hate for Marty Markowitz? I'm adding him to your axis of evil.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Axis of evil? Sound like Dubya talk. Please stop stalking me on this site.

  • youngpro

ironically YOURE the one that has added Quinn and Bloomberg posts and joined their groups on your facebook so that you could stalk them by seeing what people say about them, finding out where their rallies are, and flaming their walls.

asshole. fuck off already. get a life, friends, and lose weight fat ass.

Please stop using terms like 'stalking' since you have no idea what they mean. Please stop making every post into something relating to animal rights. Please stop making every other post something about your axis of evil (Bloomberg, Quinn, and Markowitz) - of course it sounds like Dubya talk, both you and he are idiots. Please stop breathing.
