Earlier this morning Brownstoner posted some photos of the aftermath of a motorcycle accident on Atlantic Avenue and Hoyt Street in Boerum Hill. Now the Daily News provides some more details, confirming original reports that the driver was killed.

The motorcyclist was described as being "out-of-control," and was reportedly thrown from his bike and then killed when an SUV hit him. One witness told the paper, "I was looking at him, and he was just flipping."

The driver of the SUV, 63-year-old Dozie Flowers, was not charged, and told the paper, "I tried to hit the brakes to slow down, and I swerved because I saw the bike first. But I couldn't miss him," later adding, "It was an accident, but it doesn't take away from the fact there was a human life involved, and I was part of it."

People all over the world ride motorcycles in cities much more congested than New York.

By and large, the people that die are the people who take too many risks and do dumb things. Sure, motorcyclists who are just minding their business get hit by cars too. But so do pedestrians.

  • grandzu

ERs call them donorcycles for a reason.

  • inoyourider

It's definitely not a great idea to ride in the city.

    There's too much traffic...

Wonder if the biker was goofing off when he lost control?

Once saw a whole group of assholes revving their bikes and doing wheelies at a red light. When the light changed one of the guys who had his bike rapping hot went sideways and laid the bike down in a convenience store display window.

That was pretty funny, and no one went to help him.

Wish I could laugh at this story too, but this is just sad.

  • Gotham Extremist

This is the reason why most of these people are from the ghetto. You will never see an educated white man do stupid shit like that.

  • inoyourider

No educated, decent person would do the sort of dumb shit the crazy bikers around here do.

Lol, yeah, if you're a motorcyclist in the city, you will DEFINITELY die!

Of course, if you're not a motorcyclist, you'll die too, so I suppose you're right on about that law of averages.

And to the genius who suggests "moving to Montana", check NHTSA statistics, you're FAR more likely to have a fatal crash there than in NYC.

Man, we've got some dim bulbs in here...

I like to think it was one of those douchebags who gun their engines roaring down the street setting off car alarms.

I sold my bike a couple years ago, a swell 1975 Honda CB750F that I modified into a cafe racer. I was sad at the time, but I don't regret it. You have to know that if you ride a motorbike in the City, the law of averages will catch up to you and you will die.

Motorcycle licenses should come with mandatory organ donor cards.

So how fast was the SUV driver going, and were they paying attention?

If the moto rider wrecked on his own accord, sure, that's his fault. But the way the article is written, it sounds like he would have survived the crash if he hadn't been hit by the driver of the SUV.

  • inoyourider

Sounds like the guy wrecked on his own.

"The biker lost control of his silver Honda CBR Racing motorcycle and fell off, tumbling to Atlantic Ave. and Bond St. in Boerum Hill.

"I was looking at him, and he was just flipping," said Abid Hussein, 20, manager of a nearby store.

That's when the brown Ford Explorer came roaring in at 6:15 a.m.

"I tried to hit the brakes to slow down, and I swerved because I saw the

bike first," said Dozie Flowers, 63, who was driving the SUV. "But I couldn't miss him."

wasn`t Atlantic Ave recently designated the deadliest road in all 5 boroughs?

  • MrFeenysCar

    pretty much.

    http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/brooklyn/2010/01/10/2010-01-10_steps_from_danger_atlantic_ave_stats_horrify_pedestrians.html

atlantic is a ****-show. people treat it like a highway because its multi-lane, forgetting the fact that most of those lanes change to and from parking lanes, are interupted by traffic lights every hundred yards, and exist under train tracks in most parts.

people get pissed because they keep getting caught at the lights, then make up for it by flying 85mph in open stretches. im really surprised its not more deadly.

  • pigeon

I imagine Queens Blvd can't be far behind it.

  • MrFeenysCar

the linked story actually said Queens Blvd had about half the number of pedestrian deaths. although Atlantic was 9 deaths over a 2 year period i think..so a couple freak accidents could throw off the numbers.

  • Gotham Extremist

Those sport bikes are rolling coffins. If you ride one, I suggest you either move to Montana or get rid of it, its bound to happen.

  • inoyourider

Those crotch rockets can be tricky to ride.
