Map: Who's Moving Where?

The people at Forbes, with the help of some Internal Revenue Service data, have created an interactive map tracking where Americans moved during 2008.

The red lines indicate outward movement, while the black lines indicate inward movement, and they've separated everything into counties, so you can get a good look at the movement trends in to and out of Queens, Bronx, Kings, Richmond and New York counties. (Poor Staten Island, looks like they lose this round.) Another feature: you can click on certain spots on the map to find out exact numbers—for example, 14,581 people moved from Queens County to Kings County that year, with 21,054 moving from Kings to Queens.

For fun, and to perpetuate the coastal rivalry, we added the Los Angeles county map—looks like they lost a lot more residents than NYC that year.

Wow, look at all those people moving from Ohio to Brooklyn!

  • Tower18

Actually, if you look at it, there's much less coming from Ohio and the rest of the Midwest than people like to believe. In fact, it looks like a large amount of the movement into Brooklyn is coming from New England and the West Coast.

Quick little plug - Mediaite did something similar at the end of 2009, tracking people's moves over the decade, including blurbs about why people moved.

I love how the Staten Island chart shows exactly two destinations - Florida and New Jersey. Both of those places are chock full of guidos and retired city workers who complain about the water and the lack of good bagels and pizza.

  • look at those two lucky mo-fos that escaped to hawaii.

I can see my line from here.

Hmm, Kings definitely has a lot of Black lines...

I also find the numerous red lines pretty funny too. I could make generalizations/assumptions/etc but I'm gonna leave that for someone else.
