Shooting Fireworks on L Train Platform at Union Square

060910ltrain.jpg [UPDATE BELOW] We've just received a tip that there was just a shooting on the L Train platform at Union Square. Our tipster writes, "It happened at probably 11:05. As everyone stepped out of the train, which was 8th Ave bound, a bunch of shots rang out like an automatic weapon. It was towards the eastern end of the train. Everyone ran the opposite direction, as did I. I'm not sure about much else except there were a bunch of cops running down there and it seemed like maybe there were some red lights on as if someone pulled an alarm afterward or something... A co-worker of mine was also on the train and she said she ran the wrong way and saw someone who was shot."

UPDATE 11:35: Twitter user "sha_bk_boogie" tweets: "WTF just got off the L train @ union square and someone started shooting!! Got watch the news to see what happened cause I was ghost." Other tweets are filtering in, so it looks like something did happen. Our contact at NYC Transit is looking into the incident.

UPDATE 11:42 a.m.:A spokesman for NYC Transit tells us that Police officers assigned to Union Sq (there is a Police District Office at the station) responded to the platform and discovered it was kids playing with fireworks. Guess our tipster's co-worker who "saw someone shot" has some 'splainin to do.

This is just like the "explosion" the other day. I think that some so-called reporters might have some 'splaining to do. Tips are just rumors!

  • buttface

Can't wait for some high school kids to get lead from NYPD for playing with firecrackers.

  • EastRiver

Well, they are illegal in New York. Even sparklers.

  • This is why Spotd NYC was created. However, it doesn't seem like anyone uses it.

    Wilin out son!

  • A shooting would be horrible, but, seriously, fireworks on a subway platform? That's not cool either. Isn't there a law about causing a public panic?

  • Spirit of 76

New York state law prohibits the sale, possession or transport of any kind of fireworks. Subway platform or anywhere else, it's illegal.

If you see something, say something. Apparently the thing you say can be a lie. More interesting that way, I guess.

If you don't see something, make some shit up.

  • If only twitter actually WORKED .. #overcapacity!
