Drunk Driver's Car Burns Up After Driving on Four Flats

Robert Abreu
We don't care what anyone says about 17-year-old Robert Abreu of Long Island—this kid's got true grit. Sure, the argument could be made that Abreu was too drunk to drive at 5 a.m. last Sunday, and that even if he had been sober, driving on four flat tires was not going to get him very far. But Abreu is obviously possessed of that same pioneering spirit that opened up the western territories and... built the grand Coliseum in Nassau. There's just one thing he didn't anticipate: his car catching on fire from the sparks flying up from the rims grinding on the pavement.

When a state trooper responded to a report of a car on fire on the Meadowbrook Parkway, he found the teen dutifully standing outside the burning vehicle. After failing a field sobriety test, Abreu was promptly was taken to jail, where he's no doubt kicking himself for forgetting to fireproof those rims.

He has an intellectual look about him. Rocket scientist-like.

Love the Wall of Shame on Newsday. Nothing is more flattering than a drunken mugshot.

    Bobby Abreu??

He burned out playing with the Yankees as well, but somehow had a resurgence in Anaheim. Clearly, this kid needs to head out West.

Clearly, the tires went flat because they couldn't handle his weight.

    This is news, why?

With all that is happening in NYC, can Gothamist let a day go by without a story of a car crash?

  • Manitoba

While I agree that car crashes and pedestrians getting mowed down is a regular enough event that they hardly need to be reported anymore, this DUI is particularly brazen and quite funny (largely because nobody was hurt).

Gothamist is full of pointless stories, many designed to remind us that there are some very dumb people out there. This seems to fall in line with those.

Plus, I'd rather read this than another story about the woman suing her employer because she was told she's hot, or another story about Lebron.
