The New iPhone Gets (Officially) Unveiled

iphone0610.jpg

In case you missed the scandalous spoiler alert in April, then today you are first hearing of the new iPhone from Apple. CNET (and everyone else on the internet) liveblogged Steve Jobs's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote speech earlier should you want every little detail, but here's the rundown.

  • The operating system is now called iOS 4 (instead of OS)
  • The camera will get amped up 2 megapixels (from 3 to 5) and get a 5x digital zoom and tap focus
  • You'll be able to edit your hi-def video in iMovie right there on your phone
  • There will be a front-facing camera and something called FaceTime that allows for video calling
  • They're calling the screen a "Retina Display," and claim it's the highest resolution phone screen ever
  • They're promising a better battery!
  • You'll be able to run multiple apps at the same time
  • There will be one inbox for multiple e-mail accounts

On June 21st current iPhone 3G and 3GS owners will be able to upgrad to iOS 4.0 at no charge. Pre-orders for the new phone (which Jobs called "the thinnest smartphone on the planet") start June 15th, and it will be on sale June 24th. Until then, these photos will have to satisfy you. Are you gonna be in line with this guy?

This is one instance where rationalizing makes economical sense....

from a design standpoint, it's really beautiful.

only apple could come out with something that can make my nine month old product (my iphone 3gs) look immediately dated.

say what you will about them, but they are some talented mofo's.

    that shit does look delicious!

(i know. i don't even normally talk like that but something about the product brings out the mama in me. mmm-mmm.)

This may be the absolute worst place to ask an honest question but what does:

On June 21st current iPhone 3G and 3GS owners will be able to upgrad to iOS 4.0 at no charge.

mean? Is this referring to the software update? Or is someone suggesting that you can physically upgrade your old phone for a new one?

  • Kreo

anyone with a contract expiring in 2010 can upgrade the phone before the expiration, which means you get an up to 6 month earlier upgrade. Also, the iOS 4 will be available for newer pre-generation 4 iPhones.

  • Spirit of 76

Not quite all iPhones. Only the 3G and the 3GS. Owners of original iPhones are out of luck, but anyone who's still holding on that antique should really consider upgrading to newer hardware. Same goes for original iPod touch units.

  • jaypea

Thank you! I didn't think the lingo sounded right there. So anyone with a contract up in 2010 can UPGRADE. Everyone else gets the UPDATE.

  • Kreo

Yes exactly right, you explained it even simpler.

It is Gothamist, not a tech blog, give the guys a break :)

Now if anyone can do a proper comparison of the iPhone's IPS screen to Super AMOLED in terms of clarity, brightness and contrast under room conditions and outside.

it's apple-they always come out with 'something better' so you could justify waiting...FOREVER!

  • Gotham Extremist

If I was you I hold off getting this puppy, I wait for the one coming out in August with iOS 4.1 & 5.5 mega camera.

  • SP

    lol

  • Gotham Extremist

Oh wait! wait another 2 months for the iOS4.5, now that's the shit!

  • nicemarmot

My old one is fine. The multi-tasking will be nice, but other than that the new one doesn't sound that much better.

  • SP

    It shoots HD video dude.

  • Mr. Shankly

    Perfect for subway upskirts!

  • Stevennnn

Waiting for the cry babies saying their old phone is obsolete now. Everyone knows apple comes out with new iPhones in June so don't complain if you got an "older" one back in March or April.

the NYC side of this story is that your service on AT&T will still suck beyond belief in those hard to reach places... like buildings and manhattan.
