Bike Thieves Score Major Haul at Brooklyn Bike Shop

Brooklyn Bike and Board
Bummer: Brooklyn Bike and Board, a popular bike shop in Prospect Heights, got savagely robbed over the weekend. Twenty customers' bikes were stolen from the basement during the night, plus a bunch of other stuff. According to the shop's owners:

Somehow, the assailants came in through the front door of the building (the entrance to the apartments upstairs) and ripped the lock hinges off the door to the basement. They then proceeded to funnel 20 customer bikes and about $4000 worth of locks, lights, chain lube (?), pedals, and saddles out the front door.

We were working until about midnight last night, so it had to have happened sometime after that. The bar tenders on the block are all asking around to see if anyone saw anything. Unfortunately, no cameras on the block saw anything either. I want to sincerely apologize to my customers below who lost their bikes in this ordeal. I want you to know that I will do everything I can to make this right with each and every one of you... May god strike this man down as I write this…

And judging by the vengeful sign on the shop's door, they're ready to step in should God not move quickly enough on this matter.

This is a great bike shop, I know the owner and feel very sorry for him and his staff. This is a blow to the neighborhood, and NYC cyclists.

Well, at least they had insurance, right? Being the one-time victim of a bike being stolen, it's painful to lose a bike, but somehow softened if you can at least get some dough for a new ride.

Given that there was no one in the shop during the incident, your post should state that the shop was burglarized, not "robbed." I guess "savagely burglarized" doesn't sound quite as exciting.

This is awful. I've been to this place for repairs a few times, and they've always been great. My heart goes out to them and anyone whose bike was stolen. Next time I have some bike business, I'm taking it there.

  • JacqueMehoff

why didn't they go after the new bikes?

Brooklyn Bike and Board doesn't really carry new bikes. They have Torker single speeds and some cargo bikes, but that is about it. They're really about service and customization. Plus unloading the bikes they do sell would be difficult since the they are pretty obvious.

My heart goes out to the victims and the guys at Brooklyn Bike and Board. Nobody likes to have their bike stolen and the guys at BByB are all righteous. I've spent many hours in the shop and any time I needed some work done, it was always done professionally. Even after this incident, I would still trust them with my bikes. I have absolutely no reservations about returning to this shop, they will do all they can to rectify this unfortunate event.

seconding this. the guys at bbyb have always been nothing but helpful and i've never once had a bad experience there. what a fucking shame that some loser assholes had to go and rob the place. my heart goes out.

  • ganghiscon

They'd probably be a lot more suspicious to unload on Craigslist or other shops.

  • CR

There would have had to have been a truck or large van with that many bikes involved.

  • wobbleSmith

shouldn't there be some celebration on the return to the old NY? "take that, hipsters!" et al?

  • dogbraincatscan

LOL @ thinking only out-of-town "hipsters" ride bicycles in New AMSTERDAM.

  • paulie

    1. On Vanderbilt? This place is tame.

    2. A small business owner got fucked. Don't be a dick.

  • grandzu

    Thats a bitch.

But wasn't long time Bicycle Station priced out of this location so this new bike store could take its place?
