Bad Dad Stars in The Treasure of the Citi Field Madre

2010_06_metsfoul.jpg

The Mets are a team of sublime contradictions: they currently have the best home record in the league (22-9), but they also have the largest decline in home field attendance. And worst of all, it turns out the people who are coming to the games are all greedy hooligans hell bent on stealing foul balls from children!

During yesterday's victory against the Marlins, 10-year-old Ethan Edelman, who was seated behind the photographers' well on the third base line, had his glove up to catch a foul ball that was tossed to the crowd by David Wright. As you can see in the video below the jump, it was instead snatched by adult Mike Terry, to Edelman's utter bewilderment. Terry handed the ball to his own child, 3-year-old Mackey, but the assembled masses demanded blood: "I didn't realize there was a little boy behind me. I gave it to my little guy, and all [of a] sudden the whole crowd was booing me. I don't think they realized that I gave it to [my] kid," Terry said.

Even after umpire Mike Winters tossed another ball to Edelman, the crowd booed and catcalled until Terry took the ball he intercepted and gave it back to the youngster. Later on, David Wright intervened and got new balls for everybody involved. Despite the dark overtones of the story, the News goes out of its way to try to mask the pain and suffering that man's lust for greed incurred:

"So I think everybody ... went home happy," Wright said.

Ethan's family agreed.

"It was a happy ending," said Edelman's aunt Karen Ferreira.

"Everyone's happy now."

Wow, how did this non-story get that many comments? Oh, here's one more.

They edited out the part at the end of the YouTube clip where the usher pulls off the guys rubber mask, revealing him to actually be Bernie Madoff!

Who would have gotten away with it, if it weren't for these meddling bloggers!

  • wobbleSmith

i was watching this game on TV; Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Ralph Kiner were HAMMERING this guy for his behavior. When Ralph Kiner is suggesting you've just put two kids into a lifetime of therapy, you know you've been a first class dickbag.

Maybe he saw the kid, maybe he didn't. I love reading comments from losers like felix who wish violence and hate on anyone he disagrees with about anything, and yet felix doesn't understand just how "D-Bag" that makes him. It's sad really. Much more sad than a kid missing, and then eventually getting, a $2 souvenir that he'll probably lose or his parents will sell on ebay.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Reading comprehesion failed. I didn't mention any violence but that he should be banned for his unsportmanship behavior. Also you are the last one on this blog that should criticize anyone. Your remarks are very offensive and lame.

The fact that you disagree with me proves my point. Maybe you didn't mention violence this one time, but I'm sure you were thinking it. You hate humanity and it shows. My remarks are only offensive to idiots like you who believe themselves better than the rest of us when you're really much, much less. And 'lame' is your middle name. Felixthelamecat.

So now you read my thoughts? wow, did you forget your medication today? compassion doesn't mean I hate humanity. logic failed miserably. Your remarks are quite offensive and lame.

Just like you always seem to read everyone else's thoughts and ascribe actions to them that your tiny little mind thinks up. You try to be funny on Gothamist and probably other sites that I don't visit, but every time you fall short. You never show compassion for anything but animals. You will probably respond that humans are animals, but then when I point that out in regards to the fact that a lot of animals are carnivores, you'll try some other tangent that doesn't make sense to try and prove your weak point. That's probably why your own cat hates you and avoids you (you've admitted this on another post, so don't try to redact it); you won't feed him meat. You are a sad, sad, sad individual.

  • I bet you he works for Goldman Sachs.

  • boogpowell

if he does than he is smarter and better than you.

  • You sound like a 10 yr old but most likely a pasty-looking 50 yr old, jock-sniffing overweight fool with way too many issues to get into.

this guy is really a D-Bag and thinks it is justified because he gave the ball to his kid. Damn, I bet his is a yankee fan, no way a Mets fan. Thanks D-Bag for making us Mets fans look bad. You should be banned from the stadium.

  • boogpowell

    1) no yankees fans would even consider going to a triple-a game like mets marlins 2) when a ball comes in your direction at a game, your instincts make you go for it. Im sure this guy saw the ball and thought, oh, let me get this for my son. Its not like he knocked the kid out to grab it. And in the end everyone got a ball. this isnt a big deal at all and your attitude only shows me that u havent been to many games like most mets fans as apparent by their weak attendance. 3) In no way should someone be banned from the stadium for fairly grabbing a ball that is thrown into the stands. I know its mean to grab a ball from in front of a kid but this in no way broke the law. the only way you get banned is if you break the law.

  • TKaisen

Wow, the Yanks dropped 2 to a Triple A squad? That's rough.

  • boogpowell

if u keep reading its says "mets marlins". i was referring to the marlins. Its like yanks vs baltimore. just practice for the yankees, like playing a triple a team.

  • wobbleSmith

the marlins are a pretty decent team. one that beat the yankees in the 2003 WS, you may recall.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

how does my remarks tell you that I haven't been to any games? wrong but I haven't taken any balls from children. The stadium is private property and people can be banned from the stadium for unsportmanship behavior not just for illegal behavior. And this guy is a d-bag for taking the ball from the kid. No way that he didn't see this kid.

  • boogpowell

your remark tells me you havent been to games because you dont know what its like when a ball is thrown in your direction. when a ball is near you, you dont first look around to see if any kids are there. you just go for the ball. you only have a split second to react. I guess I cant claim you dont go to games, you just dont pay attention when you go. this guy reacted and then after the fact realized what happened so he gave the kid the ball. Also, mets arent trying to ban people unless they commit crimes at the stadium. If they banned everyone who was unsportsmanlike then everyone would be banned. When i went to the yanks mets series this year, the whole crowd was either cheering yankees suck or mets suck. This isunsportsmanlike behavior. Should everyone at these games have been banned? On the other hand, if you puke on people on purpose like Phillies fans, you get banned bc this is a crime.
