Photo by Jake Dobkin/Gothamist In May there was some speculation about SoHo's Apple Store discriminating against Chinese people, with claims coming out that racial profiling was at work. Now word is that New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is investigating the claims that those of Asian descent are refused iPads due to smuggling fears.
According to Politico the discrimination didn't end in SoHo, as Cuomo's office "received complaints over the treatment at two Apple stores in New York City." The other is the 14th Street store, and a source told the site that investigators from the office's Civil Rights Bureau had already interviewed store managers, and that Apple was cooperating as the investigation continues.
However, the company's press office isn't talking, and a source said they "had briefly instituted a questionnaire for use in the course of iPad sales, aimed at blocking those illegal exports." The iPad isn't available in China (where it's manufactured), and according to Vanity Fair, smuggling has been on the rise since the device hit shelves.
