Tornado Watch In Effect For NYC, Tri-State Area

2010_06_torn.jpg The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for the tri-state area until 8 p.m. and its forecast for this afternoon says, "Showers and thunderstorms. Some storms could be severe, with large hail and damaging winds. High near 89. Southwest wind around 17 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms."

AccuWeather adds, "The same system that sparked Saturday's deadly tornado outbreak in the Midwest is moving across the Northeast today... Remember, a tornado watch means conditions are right for tornadoes to develop and you should stay on alert. A tornado warning means a tornado has been sighted or detected in your local area and you need to take action immediately."

Anyone dealing with this event or wanting more up to date alerts from New York public safety agencies check out Nixle. The website is pretty self explanatory.

I thought it was a pretty interesting site, certainly relevant to these kind of things.

so much for the warning huh? i remember a friend who was an astrophysics major at columbia explaining to me why tornados in manhattan are nearly impossible -- of course, everything went right over my head, but she was so confident in her belief that she got me convinced anyway.

Um, or just another balls-hot day with 13 seconds of rain.

Damn weathermen destroyed my day. They've been calling for rain for like the last three days. Today we get a tornado warning and dangerous thunderstorms. Turns out to be a beautiful day, one of the best all week. What a job. You get paid to bullshit all day.

Where were you? Almost 3 years ago, a EF2 level tornado (with winds well in excess of 100mph) hit down in Brooklyn resulting in widespread damage. Along with the tornado was an accompanying severe storm system which significantly delayed or suspended subway service on all 24 lines. News of this tornado was widely covered in the media for days.
