Beached Dolphin Found On Long Island

Yesterday afternoon around 4 p.m. a 6-foot, 500-pound common dolphin washed up on the shore of Gilgo Beach on Long Island. It was first watched over and comforted by the Nassau County Police, who said they had a brochure on what to do in this type of emergency, according to WPIX. A rescue team from the Riverhead Foundation showed up with a stretcher and took over from there.

One rescue team member explained, "We're going to take it back to our facility in Riverhead at the Atlantis Marine World and Aquarium... we're going to do an assessment of the animal and hopefully find out what's wrong with it." Allegedly it's not out of the question that the dolphin may have become sick from the oil spill, and made its way here—but it's unlikely. The dolphin is still alive has now died :(

Unfortunately, it's the season for recreational boating, etc. i doubt this will be the last sad story we hear like this :(...

@robin - the Post article said it had injuries near it's tail and was bleeding, maybe they wanted to mend it up.

Meanwhile the IWC will reverse its ban on commercial whaling ending 3 decades of progress to save the whales

  • militza

uuggghh...don't get me started on that.

it's not fair that japan and a few other countries get to determine these things with a simple vote. also, a few little countries (whose votes are essential to tip the balance) don't vote at all and as a result bans and laws are lifted.

Aww, poor dolphin. I wonder why they couldn't just roll him back into the water? Why take him to a facility? Did they know for sure that it was sick?

Usually when a dolphin or a while get beached its because they're either really young or sick. In the case of whales, there's not much you can do but watch it die, but dolphins and small and light enough that you can transport them to a facility to rehabilitate them before you send them back into the ocean. If they just pushed the sick or young dolphin back in, they'd probably end up getting killed or beached again.

depressing...., well no worries, humans can waddle to Donut donuts with no care except for themselves.

  • Dead Himmler

I just kicked my neighbors dog on your behalf.

i kicked one on accident this morning, then kicked one after reading felix's ass comment, and then 2 more just to one-up you.

  • youngpro

but those were humans that obviously showed care by tending to the injured animal. but that doesnt matter to you does it?
