St. Mark's Mosaics In Trouble?

mosaiccoverup.jpg
via EV Grieve
The man behind the mosaics on St. Mark's Place, Jim Powers (recently profiled in this documentary), took to his blog on May 20th to say: "bad day......MOSAICS to be covered and REMOVED after 26 years." Now EV Grieve has photos of them covered up with tape that reads: "Mosiac Work To Be Removed." We're attempting to get in touch with Powers to see if we can get some answers (it's possible he no longer has funds to keep up with the upkeep of the pieces), and will update if we reach him. In the meantime: save the mosaics!

I always thought the mosaics were kind of nice.

Why do you have a problem with it ?

Jim Powers has been putting up artwork mostly at his own expense for the past 26 years You complain of him "trying to make a profit" Don't you profit from the work you do?

He is not trying to get rich It costs money (and effort)

to maintain the mosaics It seems he's trying to stop a financial sinkhole You say you like his work how much have you donated

Good riddance to ugly hippie art!

    Go back to Jersey

come on, you can troll better than that can't ya? this time with feeling.

look up "mosaic man" on youtube.. bunch of videos about him

  • Papercutninja

they have to be removed, otherwise the toddlers of ohio-transplants may accidentally get cut on the character of this city.

    I agree +1

  • gtraindelay

    wow +1

Is this perhaps a ploy by Jim Powers to raise money? If the city wants to remove the Mosaics, their going to remove them. Giving Jim money can't stop the city.

Unless, it's Jim Powers that will remove them if he doesn't get support.

P.s. I'm a huge fan of the Mosaics...but something doesn't make sense here.

In fact, reading his blog, it seems pretty clear that he wants money or "the mosaics are in trouble".

I've met him a few times and all he talked about was how I should support him.

  • cronegirl

He sounds deperate for money. He has no city or state funding he's been doing it mostly out of pocket for more than twenty years Meanwhile trust funders are showered with cash for producing crap If you posters and readers like his work so much prove it there is a link to his blog to donate through pay pal

  • dustyrebel

It's his art, that he decided to place all over public property. If he wants to take it down because it's not turning a profit, he can. But we shouldn't pretend it's an outside force, other then his desire for cash.

As for "trust funders are showered with cash for producing crap", that's a very subjective statement. Some would say plastering trinkets on a lamp post is crap.

I have no problem with him petitioning for support. Personally, even as a huge fan of the mosaics, I have a problem supporting someone who makes public art and then threatens to take it away if people don't pay up.

Not sure I understand the point you're trying to make with the link to downtown express. I like to see my tax dollars at work..

  • cronegirl

I refer to the photo of ladders embedded in cubes

    "sculptures"

proof that trust funders are paid to produce crap

  • dustyrebel

    1. This is park not funded by tax money. It's land owned by Trinity and will temporary be a sculpture park, as a gift to the community.

    2. Seems really strange for you to attack the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, a nonprofit, that provides grants to artist like Jim Powers. (Wasn't that your original argument?!?!?)

    3. The photo shown on that site is of the park under construction. Seems odd to judge art in progress. And again, art is subjective. What is crap to one person, is not to another. As I said earlier about Power's Mosaics.

    4. You make an assumption that the artist are trust-funders and seem to give a strange artist value to one's economical status.

    Save the mosaics!

I met this guy like 20 years ago in the east vill.

Guys like him are what make NYC special. Period.

I dont know what happened, but NYC usedto be a cool city. Its gotten way over regulated. is this due to the hipsters or bloomberg? or maybe both.
