SI Ferry Bathroom Arrest

2010_06_bathroomstall.jpg Eek: A man was arrested after allegedly touching a 14-year-old boy under a bathroom stall on a Staten Island Ferry yesterday morning. According to the Advance, "The victim left the bathroom and told his father what had happened, and the two then informed police officers stationed on the boat." Francisco Andrade, 31, of Queens was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, loitering and harassment. The Advance adds, "The arrest comes as the city Department of Transportation instituted a cut to deckhands and restroom attendants onboard the boats in a move expected to save $1.4 million a year, but which raises safety concerns."

i swear. some humans really need to get neutered, since they really can't control themselves, like certain pets.

how about 3 strikes and you're ball-less? sounds pretty fair to me.

The father showed great restraint by not beating the living shit out of this pervert...

    Seriously.

The police on the ferry do a good job. They are always visible, and definitely give the boats an overall safer vibe.

Yes, as long as you sit near the front of the boat, where the NYPD and deckhands hold a constant coffee-klatch. Otherwise, officers seem to forget there are three decks and an aft portion of each boat, which they never see unless someone specifically calls them over (as was the case with the boy in the bathroom). NYPD should teach these cops to do a walk-around and check on the bathrooms once or twice per trip.

If there is good news here, it's that the boy told his father and his father took him seriously. And that, in turn, means the suspect was apprehended (which hopefully, will keep other kids safer).

When children and teenagers know their boundaries--and adults respect their kids' recognition of violation of boundaries--it creates healthier children and communities.

Not sure how this ties into the story, considering the deckhands/restroom attendants seem to have played no part in this. The boy got touched in the bathroom, he told his dad and they told the cops.

Agreed. Have seen some weird goings-on in these bathrooms over the years, and the deckhands have never, ever provided security against such stuff. That's why there are NYPD officers on each boat.

Personally, if I had a 14-year-old son, I'd be damned if I'd let him go to ANY public restroom without me being nearby.

  • I think the point suggested is that if there is a regular (if not constant) presence in the bathroom, then crime could be averted. It's sort of like the argument about having a station agent at a subway station or putting a cop on a corner—seeing an authority figure would possibly deter crime.

  • My comment still stands. From the Advance article:

Eight women’s room matrons and 12 deckhands who clean the men’s rooms will be lost to attrition, and their jobs will be shifted to other maintenance employees who will clean the boats in a rotation similar to how airport restrooms are cleaned.

They're using the future tense, meaning the deckhands and attendants have not been cut yet, meaning that their presence did not prevent this from happening. Thus, their being cut would have no effect, at least in this case, on bathroom safety.

Geez, kane, you really need to give Jen Chung a break.

Even though she graduated from Columbia U., it wasn't from their School of Journalism. So you gotta cut her some slack. lol

yes but it might have averted crimes which are unreported of course. it might discourage those who flock to bathrooms to commit such sexual crimes.

then again, maybe this man takes a wide stance :D
