Author Says "Meat Is For Pussies"

What's up, carnivores? PETA thinks you're a bunch of pussies. Their words! Or rather, the words of author John Joseph, whose book Meat Is for Pussies: A How-To Guide for Dudes Who Want to Get Fit, Kick Ass, and Take Names they're plugging on their blog. It will allegedly bring men face-to-face with the horrors of factory farming, and outline a more humane cruelty-free lifestyle. Grub Street points out that Joseph is pretty ripped (well, more ripped than Moby), and was even “raised by the mean streets of NYC in the mid-70s." He credits changing how he thought about food for saving his life, and now wants to pass along that knowledge. But what about that thing that Troy McClure once said? "Don't kid yourself Jimmy, if a cow ever got the chance he'd eat you and everyone you care about."

We've contacted Mike O'Dea at The Meat Hook (the Brooklyn butcher shop that does not, fwiw, support factory farming) for a comment defending the meat eaters amongst the male gender—we'll update when we hear back.

LOL judging from looking at all the comments, I love how all the Vegans/Vegeterians are the ones who are harassing the most people.

And while I will admit that some "Meat-heads" are just stupid red-necks, a good amount of both vegetables and meat=good balanced meal. Get over it.

ATTN Gothamist advertisers: The reptititve inane trolling and posing can fatigue even the least curious of viewers. The board has become a turn-off and a loser in re: advertising rev, except for people who don't patronize your services. I'm gone again, and you're wasting your time and money here. Nothing to see or be interested here. Lost consumer and negative impression, bye!

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

  • John Clavis

I like puppies *and* bacon! I'm a sensitive flesh-eater! I drink milk straight from the carton... but it's *soy* milk! Granola girls and meat queens *all* want a taste of THIS!

  • LB

Well if I'm a "Pussy" for eating meat, At least I'm healthy bitches !

  • laisla

    That's a logic failure, sir!

I am a life long vegetarian, and I am quite healthy. And I know plenty of people for whom the opposite is true. Different diets work for different people.

  • kcin122

calling people who don't agree with you "pussies" is a great way to get them to agree with you!!!!

  • handsomedevil

hey moron its called retoric why dont you look it up thats how argument works. first it gets your attention and then you listen to the reasons why eating meat is wrong.

  • handsomedevil

its like peta, at first I thought they were a bunch of attention whores who were bad for animal rights but then I realized they are right and I joined

  • Amanda Harletsch

this posts proves once again 90% of the comments are from males that think being compassionate to animals is a weakness. There you have for asserting brutish identity just because, no other consideration at all!.

It's a fact that red meat improves ones sex life. It does not matter if you're male or female. I encourage any vegans to try it. Just once. You are just not living if you don't. I had a girlfriend last fall that I converted from a vegan to meat eater. She did not regret it and told me it was one of her best decisions in her life. BTW saw her last week and she is still skinny and hot. Animals are dying to feed us. At the very least we should honor their sacrifice.

  • youngpro

i couldnt agree more. what they lose in meat intake compounds and depletes their drives. of course getting them to admit this would be hard, but who needs them to admit it when i (and maybe you?) have experienced it firsthand.

  • handsomedevil

    somebody should sacrifice YOU

  • fuboy

Ah, Veggies vs. Meat eaters. Always a fun, vitriolic back and forth of insults.

  • laisla

Most of these issues are. No one can concede that every lifestyle choice they make does not need to be made by everyone else. To each their own.

  • hard times

Obviously nobody from this site even bother to read the book at all, because he bashes PETA within the first chapter, IIRC.

You don't have to agree with everything he says [and you shouldn't], and obviously he used the title to get people's attention and generate reaction, but if you open your mind a little, I think you'll admit he has some valid points, and some real strategies for good health. The book includes a solid work-out routine and some awesome recipes, as well.

  • Neverhaditsogood

And Jen gleefully repeats it. For shame. Well, at least now I know why they call it meat.

  • SP

Following the "you are what you eat" rule, I must be a vegan, considering how many vegans I eat on a daily basis.

  • handsomedevil

people like you deserve to be shot in the head with a bolt gun. that autistic bitch temple grandin could supervise it and declare it humane before she goes home to her hugging machine
