Jehovah's Witnesses v. Doctors in the Bronx

060210sbh.jpg Doctors at St. Barnabas Hospital had to rush for an emergency court order to perform a transfusion on a 55-year-old woman suffering from internal bleeding on Tuesday. Jean Leslie was admitted to the hospital after doctors at the St. Barnabas nursing home noticed problems with her blood tests, and said her life was in danger if she didn't receive a blood transfusion. But her family are practicing Jehovah's Witnesses, who believe "God and prayer alone" will save her, and wouldn't consent to the procedure.

St. Barnabas spokesman Steven Clark said that it was the first time the hospital had to go to court for an emergency order in eight years, and "the attending physician felt it was urgent that if she didn't get a transfusion, she would die." Leslie's mother and sister are devout Jehovah's Witnesses, but it's unclear if Leslie practices as well. Leslie suffered from a stroke in 2008, and court papers say her speech is "limited to short outbursts of vulgarities."

According to the Wikipedia article "Jehovah's Witnesses and Blood Transfusions," Jehovah's Witnesses believe the Bible prohibits ingesting blood, and have adapted that rule to refusing to donate blood or accept blood transfusions.

Allow a trees 'own' leaves speak of the condition of its integrity.

    Here is our Blood brochure:

Death 'after' refusal of blood is not death 'from' refusal of blood. But that's how it's configured by many irrisponsible ones.

Controlled studies are better. Years of data from Bloodless Hospitals show only advantage from refusing blood.

However, 'ONE' blood transfusion wiped out Paul Michael Glaziers family.

Here's our introduction to Jehovah's Witnesses brochure.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the JW's are out in force today.

Everyone lock your doors, close your blinds & don't answer the bell. Hide in your basement for at least 15 minutes and they'll go away.

GOTHAMIST JOURNALISTS... you need to take the time and present the true facts to your readers. They were NOT Jehovah's Witnesses! They just don't believe in blood tranfusions, since the latest medical technology offers many other safe alternatives other than the two-century old method of transfusions.

If this is the only article you read on this subject, you will be sadly misinformed. The article contradicts itself by linking to the wiki article that clearly lists dozens of blood transfusion alternatives and then claims they are "devout Witnesses" who only belive in prayer. I've seen this same article posted on sites ands wonder why. It is not honest. THEY ARE NOT JEHOVAH's WITNESSES. If you care to, read the following statement from ABC News, which took the time to report the FACTS.

"Leslie said, "I didn't want them to do the blood transfusion; especially I said I didn't want anybody else's blood." Explaining her faith, Leslie said "I'm not in the so called world of the Jehovah's Witness, but I am a witness a real witness for the Lord. I believe in the world of God."

Leslie also said that the family refused consent because they believe God alone and prayer will save Jean."

Jehovah's Witnesses take the time to get the facts rather than accept hearsay, since it involves our lives. I guess "reporters" (and many posters here) don't take the same care.

It would be nice to see people doing their research before they shoot off their mouths about blood transfusions. It is well documented that stored and transfused blood doesn’t carry oxygen because it is in shock, takes up to three hours after it is transfused. Re-circulated blood through the Cell Saver does not go into shock. You can check with Bloodless Surgery Centers such as USC Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, USA or any other Bloodless Centers through the USA. 15 miles away from where this happened is of the largest and most known bloodless centers in the world, which is the Ingelwood Hospital & bloodless medicen Center. (Google it or Utube it) They saved a man with a bloodcount of 1.5 and I willing to bet that the above mentioned woman was not even close to beeing that low. probably around 5 or 6.

Let’s do some math. The above poster says that they have the history of about 2300 legal cases involving JW’s. From my understanding there are over one million JW in the US. These 2300 cases cover about twenty years or so. Now lets do the math. IN a city of 1,000,000 people, how many criminal cases are handled, not counting civil cases. You will find it to be from 10,000 to 20,000 or more a year (people of all religions). Now lets divide 2300 by 20 years which = 150 cases from a population of 1,000,000. If you could do this same math for each religion in this country, you would find that the JW have one of the lowest percentage of crime of any religion. I challenge anyone to truthfully prove me wrong. (Many of these cases go back as much as sixty years which would make the percentage much lower) I suggest that people look at many of these cases and how the poster tries in every way to conect them with the JW's when in fact they were individuals related to JW or attended their kingdom halls for a short while.

This article is grossly innacurate, Jehovah's Witnesses have an entire DVD plus brochures that contain dozens of alternative and safer techniques to Blood Transfusions. The last time I checked, patients or their next of kin had the right to choose their medical treatment. This IS in fact the USA and not CHINA.
