T-Rex Driver Dies in Fiery Hit-And-Run Crash

A fiery crash on the City Island Bridge killed the driver of a 3-wheeled motorcycle late Sunday night. Police say Richard Perez, 37, was driving his vehicle, known as a T-Rex, with two other trikes and a motorcycle. As he was going over the bridge around 11:40 p.m., Perez lost control of the $50,000 trike, which has two wheels in the front and one in the back. He crashed head-on into a 1991 Isuzu Rodeo, and one of his friends pulled him out of the wreckage.

"I just saw my boy go into the car, I stopped, pulled him out, it was awful. I tried to revive him and that was it," Perez's friend tells ABC. Perez was badly burned in the blaze and was pronounced dead at Jacobi Hospital from severe head trauma. Cops tell the Post he had not been wearing a helmet, and they're searching for the SUV driver who abandoned his vehicle and ran from the scene.

Hey "Just Saying", how bout just saying nothing since you have nothing good to say.Haven't you heard that saying"if you have nothing nice to say,you shouldn't say anything at all"?That's my brother yr talkin about n you should b more respectful of the family n friends feelings at their time of mourning. What you've said wasn't funny in the least. You never know if it could happen to you or a family/friend. May God bless you n yr friends n family n may he forgive you for not knowing any better. Congratulations for being the "JACKHOLE OF THE YEAR"!

This tragic accident is unfortunate and i know the brother of the victim. My heart and prayers go out to his family. I am also a rider and i'm appauled! this goes to show that vehicles DO NOT respect motorcycle drivers in Nyc! Please give motorcycle riders respect on the road!

I just hope that coward that fled the scene Relives the same scene for the rest of his life.. One day karma is coming For you or your family!

So what is the deal with the SUV driver running away from the scene?

  • Tower18

Everyone is saying that in a collision between a T-Rex and an SUV, it was obviously the T-Rex that was dangerously designed and dangerous to drive. What about the SUV? Yes, the T-Rex may be small. But, isn't an SUV maybe a little big/tall?

  • Jamie McDonald

Given the fact that two members of T-Rex died in separate car accidents, isn't naming a motor vehicle "T-Rex" a little like naming an airplane "The Buddy Holly"?

I was sitting outside at a bar on N7th and Wythe Saturday night and there was some guy on one of these things hauling ass around the hood (passed by at least 4 times) Really cool looking, but can't be safe.

  • I've seen a guy riding around Brooklyn in a T-Rex before, and I honestly am very surprised that these things are street-legal. They are so close to the ground you barely notice them until you are on top of them, and any time a crash occurs, you would surely get wedged under the car, trapped.

I really hope it wasn't the same guy.

Why would the driver run? The T-Rex lost control. What kind of drugs were in the truck? City Island!

  • Angelheaded Hipster

maybe now the city will finally put a special t-rex lane there just for motorized tricycle enthusiasts

  • Kim Bong Ill

A T-Rex is much closer to a car than it is to a motorcycle. The question really is whether or not he was wearing his safety belt.

May not have made a difference in a head-on collision with an SUV.

  • Gotham Extremist

People who rides sport bikes and the t-rex are cheating death or paralysis each time they get on. Not saying anything, but you know what COULD happen to you in an accident don't you?

  • Kim Bong Ill

No need to single anyone out. We all cheat death constantly, but it always wins in the end.

  • Gotham Extremist

I have never seen a t-rex cruise at a leisurely pace, ALWAYS some douche bag going 20 mph+ over and zipping in and out of lanes. Don't need to single anyone out, this story speaks for itself.

The T-Rex and a traditional motorcycle isn't really a fair comparison. It should be more along the lines of a T-Rex and a Go-Kart. Sure you should wear a helmet when driving a go-kart, but you probably aren't, and most of the danger that requires a helmet (stability problems that would cause you to slam your head on the ground) is removed in the T-Rex's wireframe support.

  • just saying

Richard Perez would probably agree with you about the helmet. The bad news is he's now deceased, so he can't. "[Perez] was pronounced dead at Jacobi Hospital from *severe head trauma*."

But Perez had some very severe burns too. (Seems like he probably could have used some fire-retardant clothing also.)

  • ddhboy

Well he probably didn't die because of the head injuries anyway. He was crushed by the SUV, so he probably would have died with or without the helmet. I mean, you could wear a helmet while driving an SUV, but you typically don't even though you're far more safer wearing the helmet.
