30 Animals Saved From Queens Pet Store Fire

Yesterday afternoon firefighters in Queens saved 30 cats and dogs from a burning pet store in Astoria. U.S. Pet Discounts on Steinway Street was closed for the holiday, and the Daily News reports the store's metal rolldown doors were closed, presenting an obstacle for the animal's rescuers. Lt. Jerome Farrell told the paper, "We had to cut the gates, cut the locks and force our way in"... unlike what Pee Wee Herman had to do during his epic pet store fire rescue mission.

While many of the animals in Queens were rescued, Farrell noted that many of the birds could not be saved, as they are most susceptible to smoke inhalation.

quinn has been very involved in trying to stop firehouse closures....which in turn saves peoples lives. as a firefighter, personally i support her. whatever her motivation is, we need it since there aren't many advocates out there for us and she's a pretty strong one. firefighters do way more than save the lives of animals F.Y.I. but what do i know, just a guy who would run past 500 animals in a fire to try to save an unconscious child. oh well.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

yes she does do more such as:

Extend her own term limits which now makes her eligible for a life-long pension

Give herself a 25% pay raise

Hire a 600/hr lawyer which we pay for her slush fund scandals

And no sprinklers in petshops (even though I don't support animals in petshops) endangers firefighters lives as well.

What is sad is how you people don't see her saying one thing but doing the opposite. Just as she appeared once in the rally to save St. Vincent and MADE no real attempt to save it

Just as she increased her office staff ( which she is now using to promote her as mayoral) while firehouses are being closed.

Some people shouldn't be permitted to vote. Just TOO uninformed

What fiscal crisis? City Council increases budget to $52.9 million

Nothing passes in the city council without Quinn's OK. There is no democracy in the city council nor are the people represented. Quinn stops all animal welfare bills from passing including sprinklers in petshops, pets in housings, foie gras ban, humane education, etc. Anyone who has any compassion for humanity would vote against Quinn who is using our money to promote herself in preparation for her mayoral run in 2013

  • akuryo

I hope they thoroughly investigate this and file charges against the company. Now that these animals are rescued I hope they dont return them to the same neglectful company who put them in danger and neglected their welfare. For everyone who is outraged pay attention to who you vote for as Quinn is scum but she is not the only one.

  • succulent

and further more i witnessed this incident while it was occurring! they didn't even seem to care!!!!!!

  • handsomedevil

i heard they were laughing about it

  • succulent

i heard that the same people had an accidental fire a year ago at there previous location! on a holiday when the shop was closed! coincidence???? they do not have the right to care for animals!!!!! there shop was disgusting! those poor birds who died cause of selfish greedy morons!!! they need to be reported and investigated!

  • robingee

    Perfect clip.

  • nicemarmot

What would be really great is if we could plaster every pet store that sells animals in the city with posters showing exactly what those adorable puppies moms go through every day. The puppies wouldn't be so attractive if they saw the tiny metal cage, with no where to lay, and metal bars that cut the feet, and soaked in feces...where that cute little puppy was born, and where its poor mom still lives.

That being said, if you go through a rescue, don't be afraid to adopt a dog rescued from a puppy mill. My dog spent three years in hell in a puppy mill making babies and she is the sweetest, smartest, most affectionate dog ever.

  • handsomedevil

but you really should get a mutt because then you know that you aren't even enabling a puppy mill in a secondhand way by washing the blood off their hands.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

he/she isn't enabling but rescue a dog that was victimized by puppy mills. Puppy mills tortures dogs and makes profit off their suffering but the cost is bear by the dogs and the people who rescue them. Shame on those who support PET SHOPS that SELL animals.

  • handsomedevil

no you should not even touch a "purebred" dog. mutts are superior in every way and more moral. what was wrong with a mutt? surely there was one available and yet she chose this breeder dog.

  • nicemarmot

Of course there were mutts available, and they were my first choice. However my husband, having never had any sort of pet his whole life, was quite insistent upon having a type of dog he was familiar with. I refused to go to a breeder, and we didn't have any luck at the local shelters, so we wound up adopting from a wonderful rescue agency. I really hope you're not trying to imply my dog doesn't deserve a good life because she's (sort of, who really knows with those mills) a purebred?

  • handsomedevil

oh I see its your husband that is the problem LOL. but seriously he sounds like a terrible person.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Leave her alone, stop making jokes at the expense of animals who are used as commodity for other people greed and vanity. She rescued a dog which tells me she is compassionate and informed. Kudos.

  • handsomedevil

shes cool as long as she can admit that her choice was breedist which she does. maybe next time around she will divorce that husband and get a natural dog

  • mellow_fellow

    Get a room, you two!

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

don't blame the victim, don't hate puppy mills dogs but the puppy mills that exploit them. The solution is not to buy animals from stores as if they are commodities and not living beings. Rescue is always good

  • youngpro

felix, one again you have twisted this story in a way it should not be twisted if not for your fucking ridiculous way of inserting shit that isnt even in the article.

NO WHERE in the article does it mention ANYTHING about fucking breeders, ASSNOSE.

  • CaptainMXC

Pet stores get animals from breeders. Common sense. Where do you think they come from? I am really starting to wonder if youngpro is a 13 year old kid. All you do is come on these threads and start calling people names. For God sake, go into any of these stores and you will be paying a minimum of $500 for a dog and if you ask, they will give you the breeder information. Felix is a firestarter, but at least he/she has morals and an agenda that is fought with ancedotal evidence. Something better than nothing or "assnose"

  • handsomedevil

psst bro ixnay on the irefay

  • youngpro

FELIX HAS MORALS? ARE YOU SERIOUS? He went on a tirade yesterday and said he twice wished Marty Markowitz were stabbed.

Yeah, those are the morals I want to instill in my kid. You fuckneck.

  • Guest

It's getting to the point where felix and handsomedevil and whomever else they've pulled into their multiple personality web are getting to be an enormous cosmic joke. They're all filthy, disgusting sub-human, sub-animal, sub-worthy-of-any-attention cretins that they really need to leave civilization and go live far out in the Ozarks with the rest of their inbred kin. While the rest of us feel compassion for human and animals alike, these sadistic monsters wish violence and death upon those they disagree with because their puny brains do not understand the simple concept of the circle of life.

  • handsomedevil

any process that includes humans is not the circle of life you idiot. animals are good, humans bad - is it really that hard to understand? you deserve to burn to death in a pet store while watching christine quinn get mauled to death by mike tyson who then dies of bird flu

  • handsomedevil

but you dont have to be extremely passionate and moral like felix to realize that markowitz deserves to be stabbed thats kind of obvious LOL. he should get stabbed, quinn should burn to death, and you are going to die of sepsis from your fake boobs. felix cares about animals what do YOU care about? nothing but yourself obviously

  • youngpro

my point stills stands: it wasnt mentioned int he article so please fuck off, thanks.

  • handsomedevil

    also she has fake boobs

  • handsomedevil

I think even those dogs think they are better than other dogs. like pomeranians who think they are the shit. its like racism only for dogs.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

oh thank god for firefighters. no kidding, i always love firemen not NYPD so much but firemen are awesome

Regardings sprinklers, Slush Fund Christine Quinn, the animal hater, veto the bill that would require sprinkles in any facility that boarded animals. She stated it was an unnecessary business costs. last year 200 animals burned alive in a pet shop in the Bronx. This christine Quinn is one ugly fucking bytch and I hope anyone with a heart would make it a point not to support this bytch. Christine Quinn should fucking burn alive.

  • RooseveltIsland360

FYI, Ladder 116 which responded to this fire is one of several fire houses across the City in danger of being closed due to budget cuts. So if Ladder 116 was already shut down many of those pets saved might have perished if another unit from further away had to respond.

Ladder 116 also serves Roosevelt Island in addition to Astoria.

  • handsomedevil

US PET DISCOUNTS is a greedy and disgusting puppy mill vender which treats animals as though they were a commodity like corn flakes. not that i've ever been there but one of my friends just told me. im glad that the animals were saved but even gladder that the place burned down, too bad it didn't have the owners inside at the time so they could get what they deserved.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

  • handsomedevil

yeah, it's too bad that fat idiot wasn't inside the pet store so she could suffer and burn to death. exactly. this place probably had no sprinklers because the owners do not care.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

it has no sprinklers because Slush Fund Christine Quinn vetoed the bill that would required sprinklers. She stated it was an unnecessary business cost yet she passes the bill that bans roll down security gates because it is not aesthetic. Quinn is so fugly and miserable that she has so much hate towards animals.

  • youngpro

"she passes the bill that bans roll down security gates"

---false. she VOTED on it. she cannot single-handedly pass anything, ass.

  • BobPomilla
You're obviously not from New York City or you would know that whether or not a bill passes in the city council, is wholly dependent on whether Christine Quinn supports it or not. The appearance of democracy in the council is a sham and woebetide to the member who opposes Quinn's wishes on a bill. Have you not heard of the slush fund scandal? Where that funny money goes is to the members that attach their lips most fervently to quinn's behind.
  • handsomedevil

plus it is because of the owners because they do not care about animals

  • dollarmenu

    Penalty, 10 yards for frottage.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

    awesome

  • Gaelic47

My wife and I used to walk past that place and see all the cute puppies and kittehs and feel sorry for them that they had to live in that filthy filthy store.
