PETA Wants Legendary Amityville Home

amityville0510.jpg The legendary Amityville home that inspired the terrifying book and movie is for sale (they're asking a little over a million bucks), and PETA wants the keys! The animal rights group says they've written to the current owner asking if they could rent the residence to set up an exhibit called the "Amityville Slaughterhouse of Horrors," which would teach carnivores about the evils of factory farms and slaughterhouses. They would also set up an on-site café where visitors could learn about vegetarian options.

The organization's VP, Tracy Reiman, wrote in her letter to the owners: "In our horror house, the sound of slaughterhouse blades whirring while animals scream for their lives would play over loudspeakers. Visitors would be able to see animatronic hens struggling for space inside tiny battery cages and lifelike fish gasping for air as they slowly suffocate on the deck of a fishing boat." On top of all that, the Daily News notes that visitors will also be able to get locked in a small pig crate, and buy souvenirs like a knife-wielding Ronald McDonald. Hopefully if this all goes down they'll create their own movie trailer to promote it.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard PETA want to do.

It's in in a residential area. The entire neighborhood, no... town has done everything they can to not promote this location to avoid tourists coming around and disturbing the area.

I would kill to live there.

Has this joke been made yet?

Does this really need to be in a residential neighborhood, in a house that is barely reminiscent of the phony "haunting" story from 30 years ago just so they can call it "Horror House?" Make the exhibit in ANY space you want, you can still call it what you want.

this double bacon steak chili cheeseburger is delicious!!

Yet another animal story from Jen Carlson? I've finally come to the realization that she herself is a member of PETA (or maybe she just likes to get people riled up in order to increase page views).

I'm all for PETA's cause, but they've got the worst strategies. How about just education instead of being condescending and using disgusting imagery? That just repels people, and makes them think PETA's a bunch of whackadoos.

I support PETA and that is why they have hated by animal abusers who hate them for their effectiveness.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

i meant this is why they are hated by animal abusers

PETA is a bunch of whackadoos. You want to support a good cause, support the ASPCA.

AGREED. A tried and true organization actually recognized by the government and other rescue and non-profits for actually doing good work.

this is an awesome idea youve got to hand it to peta they really think outside the box. they are as good at being creative and getting publicity as they are about protecting animals.

I think they should populate the house with selfish animal-abusing gothamist commenters that would be plenty scary LOL

My wife grew up a few blocks from here, and her whole family says PETA will never be allowed to buy it.

BTW, the asking price is $1.15 million because it's got 4 or 5 bedrooms, 3 and a half baths, a huge back yard, and a dock that leads to one of the creeks.

  • Humptydank

    "GET...OUT..."

"Uhmm, yeah, 1.5 mil and a private dock? Screw you, how about you pay me rent instead? And that blood on the walls is coming out of your deposit my friend..."

  • Humptydank

Considering how many of the animals they take in that they end up killing themselves, shouldn't they be just a little sensitive about being associated with an animal slaughterhouse theme?

  • longacre

Odd that PETA management doesn't seem to have any objection to the use of mules for their daily shipments of psychotropic narcotics.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

    I hope this happens.

  • dr zippy

It's a publicity stunt. PETA has no interest in buying the house.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

oh, i guess i'll rethink my vacation plans now

  • youngpro

felix you were banned from peta.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'
