Lincoln Tunnel's Center Tube Closed For Construction

The Port Authority is closing the Lincoln Tunnel's center tube—in both directions— for construction this weekend. Naturally, big delays are expected since this is a big holiday for people to visit to the city (it is Fleet Week) or for people to flee (Jersey Shore, baby!), but the Port Authority says, "Motorists are advised to use alternate routes to New York, such as the Holland Tunnel," but, hey, why not take mass transit if you can? Of course, the Lincoln Tunnel is where the city's best cell service can be found....

Maybe I just always have good luck, but I've always had better luck with the Holland Tunnel anyway. I hate when I have to take the Lincoln Tunnel.

The logic of the Port Authority is incredible to do this on a holiday weekend. However, it doesn't really surprise me. They are probably among the crowd that think all Manhattanites are gone by then or simply not leaving the city at all. The fact that folks like me find the Lincoln Tunnel the easiest and quickest way to get into New Jersey (as opposed to the impossible Staten Island route) is obviously not in their minds at all.

The project presumably requires a closure of 3 days. Without doing it on a holiday weekend, that means the tube would be have to be closed during a weekday.

I would bet that more people go through on a weekday than a weekend (due to buses), and that this plan would inconvenience fewer people than a weekday closure.
