Cano and Swisher celebrate (Bill Kostroun/AP)
  • Yankees 8 Cleveland 2: Phil Hughes started the game by striking out the first five batters he faced as he turned in another dominant performance to earn his sixth win. Hughes went seven innings and allowed two runs while striking out eight. The Yankees’ bats came alive, pounding out 12 hits and two home runs. Nick Swisher got things going early with a two-run shot to get the Yankees on the board and Robinson Cano put the game out of reach with a grand slam in the seventh.

  • Milwaukee 2 Mets 0: Once again the Mets had dominant pitching as they extended their scoreless innings streak to 35-2/3’s. Unfortunately, it was just before the final out of the game that things went wrong. Corey Hart hit a walkoff, two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off of Ryota Igarashi to end the scoreless streak and the Mets’ winning streak. The Mets blew a golden chance in the third when they loaded the bases with no outs, but they couldn’t get a run across.

Say what? There was a scoreless tie; the game would've gone into extra innings, not ended, had Corey Hart made an out.

in fact, the home run came after the final out of the game, which ended with two out in the bottom of the 9th. "The final out" was actually McGehee's popup before Hart's at-bat.

Sometimes just tossing in sportswriter cliches doesn't work, you have to actually think about what happened.

You can't piss away opportunities in a game because each one might be the only one you get. Such was the case with the Mets and the no-out bases loaded 3rd. They've got to start producing when Santana is on the mound.
