M.I.A. Gets Tweet Revenge On NYT Columnist

maya0510.jpg Did you read that New York Times piece about M.I.A. penned by contributor Lynn Hirschberg? Well, M.I.A. read it, and she's pretty pissed off. As such, she took to Twitter a few hours ago and posted a phone number, adding; "CALL ME IF YOU WANNA TALK TO ME ABOUT THE N Y T TRUTH ISSUE, ill b taking calls all day bitches." Thing is, she posted Hirschberg's cell number.

What's Maya so mad about? Here are just 10 things she must hate about Hirschberg, whose piece essentially calls B.S. on the performer's political reactionary thing. In the profile, Diplo (who works production magic on her tracks, and is also an ex-boyfriend) makes note of what he calls her "terrorism gimmick," and says: "[Maya] can’t really make music or art that well... She knows how to manipulate, how to withhold, how to get what she wants.” Kind of a blow to the ego when the performer just called Lady Gaga out for being nothing but a mimic.

It may be for printed remarks like that, that Maya has also Twittered to the world, "NEWS IS AN OPINION! UNEDITED VERSION OF THE INTERVIEW WILL BE ON neetrecordings THIS MEMORIAL WEEKEND!" Hirschberg has told The Observer that she won't be changing her number, and that "It's a fairly unethical thing to do, but I don't think it's surprising. She's a provocateur, and provocateurs want to be provocative." So who's calling? "The messages have mostly been from people trying to hook up with M.I.A. If she wants to get together with John at Bard next week, I have his number."

    Who????? And.... Who????

  • Radtard

Pardon me, but your age is showing

  • WorksInDUMBO

Seriously-- who the fuck is this? and who the fuck cares? she looks like the chick from That 70s Show.

  • It was an honest piece that examined her simplistic view and the consequences of it. She's changed her story and supports people that did horrible things.

She's all marketing, hardly the "provocateur" she thinks she is.

  • redburglar

I'm so behind. When did it become cool to be a terrorist?

  • meonabridge

    that's a girl? fuuuuuuuck

  • Jen S

Holy shit, have you guys not seen this video?? She's at least trying to do thought-provoking stuff. http://vimeo.com/11219730

  • MrManhattan

I guess that might be shocking to anyone too young or sheltered to have seen real footage from Chicago in '68 or Kent State, let alone Viet Nam or WW II.

How old is this child MIA anyway? and what does she have against ginger children? Too much South Park perhaps?

  • Guest

It's obvious why she used gingers. The director, not MIA, didn't want to piss off any other ethnicity and white people aren't supposed to get pissed off about things like this. Then they decided on redheads because it's easy to show that they were having their rights taken from them because of the way they looked. It's not groundbreaking as Jen S said and it's not anything that hasn't been done by an industrial band. Meh.

And what was that whining background noise about? I was so absorbed looking for some point in the visuals, I forgot this was supposed to be a music video. What happened to the "music" part?

  • thanks for the link. that was good.

I think it'd might have been was more powerful without all the ginger killing at the end but eh it was subversive, I liked it.

  • Jamie McDonald

Thought provoking? Subversive? If you're kind of dumb, maybe. What exactly is the thought-provoking and subversive political message here, that it's not OK to round up and kill certain groups of people en masse? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the civilized world has sort of understood that since, at the very latest, the Nuremberg Trials. Some really cutting-edge shit there, MIA. How do you people set the bar so low?

  • rambleon

The one song she had out that made her famous, she stole the tune from a Clash classic. She's just another Vanilla Ice with a really shitty attitude.

  • chlyn

Something struck a nerve, huh, Maya?

Guess you can't be as confident/talented as you claim.

  • Radtard

I fuckin love her even more now.

Listen, she's just that crazy lady ranting on the subway who now happens to have money to throw at her (poorly thought out) discretion // remixed by amazing producers.

I AM CRAZY ENTERTAINED. Keep it coming M.I.A. and don't drop the pipe!

  • noir_et_blanc

    LOL. Seconded.

I've never been able to make sense of her lyrics, one way or another. But her beats---the beats are irresistible.

  • Guest

How dumb did you just sound? You like her beats? She doesn't make any of the beats. The producers do.

  • junglisticman

She is nice and comes out to support fellow artists up and down the east coast.

    REAL RAVERS MAKE SOME NOISE!!!!

  • I read all 9 pages, now I wish I had that 5 min back.

I didnt think much of her before but I like her sligtly more now.

Well do people expect? She's a pop star. 99% of popular singers have sh*t for brains. At least this one says a few uncommon words censorship, 'PLO', 'terrorism', etc.

    (shrugs)
