Ex-State Senator Gets 7 Years For Corruption

2010_05_efrain.jpg Efrain Gonzalez Jr., who lost his 2008 Bronx State Senate primary to...Pedro Espada Jr., was sentenced for 7 years in prison for "conspiracy and fraud. Prosecutors said he had stolen [over $700,000] from nonprofit groups to cover personal expenses." The judge said, "He has brought public disgrace onto himself and onto the state Senate." The "portly" Gonzalez rolled his eyes and later said he'd appeal the sentence and added, "We Hispanics, we have to unite. It's not fair what they're doing to us. I feel like an illegal immigrant."

way to throw the race card in here. i'm pretty sure 'hispanics' weren't mentioned anywhere and now he comes with the 'we hispanics have to unite' line of bullshit.

Unfortunately, the culture of most of Latin America is corrupt. I'm sure in his mind, there is nothing wrong with the mordida.

Perhaps more than any singular issue, this is why immigration from Latin America has to be tightly controlled such that these subversive cultural tendencies can be eradicated through assimilation programs. There is a reason representative government doesn't work there, and this culture of corruption is a major part of it.

Corruption benefits a minority: The powerful and the connected.

The majority of Latin Americans know they are screwed because of corruption. And if you think European countries were always honest, please take a one-way fight to Italy or Greece or Russia.

I have to agree with brasilnut. Ripping off the poorest of the poor is shameful. As a society we don't do anything to shame politicians. We should them like sex offenders.

The Bronx needs more transparency in government. Where is Cuomo or Spitzer for the Bronx?

And, why 20 years of representation?

We need another system, one that does away with senators and allows for the people to vote directly.

What a rotten pig politician using the race/ethnic card to say he is the victim!

No wonder the Bronx is the poorest borough of all of New York City. Disgusting!
