Diet Trend!: Walk Before You Eat

052610walk.jpg If the Bodega Diet hasn't been keeping the pounds off, maybe this innovative new weight-loss technique from trainer Melissa Delancey will. She suggests countering the caloric intake of big meals by walking to and from the restaurant. Delancey got her inspiration when she and her husband decided to walk to Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Harlem from their East Village apartment, and are now leading walks to all sorts of places. Exercise: who knew?

Though the average person only burns 50-80 calories a mile, friends and clients have been enjoying the marathon walks. During a recent 19.1 mile trek from Park Slope to Williamsburg's Pies 'n' Thighs to Union Square, participant Brian Gruber admitted, "I really like pie. I thought, 'That's the perfect excuse.'" He sampled five kinds of pie, and ended the day with a few blisters on his feet. Delancey is planning walks to DiFara, Fette Sau and Fatty Cue in Brooklyn, and into Astoria for a Greek food crawl. She is also planning to ask future walkers to donate $1 a mile to charity. Those of you who decide to cook at home will just have to get fat with the rest of the nation.

    100+ blocks for Dino-BBq?

How are there 19 miles between Park Slope and Williamsberg? Williamsberg, NJ perhaps? Pul-eeze.

This is actually a good example of how exercising doesn't help people lose weight: after they exercise, they feel free to indulge. Most people will consume more than they just burned off.

    Walking is good. Period.

There's no better way to get to know a place, whether it's Greenwich Village or Gerritsen Beach.

    What makes that an "admission"?

Anyway, of course the walk wouldn't "burn off" all of the calories provided by the meal. Why would you want to do that? You eat to provide your body with nutrition; if exercise eliminated all of the calories you ate you would starve to death.

ugh can we stop giving publicity to people like this "trainer" and other supposed experts for stating the OBVIOUS!

if you live in nyc and don't already walk everywhere and anywhere that is accessible by sidewalk, you don't deserve to live in nyc with all its great foodie offerings.

and frankly you couldn't pay me (much less get paid) to walk with these dopes to restaurants. i'm so tired of all these group walks, meetup bike rides - who moves to nyc just to be ESCORTED everywhere?! grow some balls already, explore this fine city on your own.

Really nothing pisses me off more than people who do things together. Fucking cocksuckers.

Agreed. This might as well be called "Shit My Fiance and I Already Do" diet.

Will the plagiarism ever stop? First the douche from Columbia rips off Patton Oswalt, now this one rips off Jared from Subway.
