"Amityville Horror" House For Sale, Asking $1.15 Million

2010_05_amityville.jpg Are you interested in a "Legendary Amityville Home" that's a "Pristine,Charming 3-Story, Waterfront Dutch Colonial Commanding Beautiful Views Of Amityville River"? Would you be more interested if you knew it was the home that inspired the "Amityville Horror" book and films? The real estate agent tells Newsday, "It's one of the more beautifully redone houses in the neighborhood."

The home gained its notoriety when Ronald DeFeos killed six family members while they were sleeping in 1974 and subsequent owners George and Kathleen Lutz claimed to be haunted for 28 days, which were detailed in the book "The Amityville Horror" (on the cover: "This book will scare the hell out of you"—Kansas City Star). However, James Cromarty, who lived in the house after the Lutzes were foreclosed upon, "Nothing weird ever happened, except for people coming by because of the book and the movie."

Another broker, whose brother used to own the property, also said, "It's a gorgeous, big center hall Colonial with a finished basement," and there's "nothing spooky about it." Well, it definitely is pretty—check out the listing.

    house looks awesome.

I grew up in Amityville. The only horror was taxpayers having to front the cost of having a patrol car posted in the vicinity of the house to keep drunks from screaming ghost noises into the windows at 3am. Also, true story: one time, Rikki Rocket, the drummer from Poison pulled up in a limo and asked some friends of mine where the house was and they got to pile into the limo and take him there, which I suppose was pretty friggin cool when you're in 7th grade.

  • Rikki

Actually, it was a rental car, but I'll take the limo story. Sounds cooler! LOL!

  • I knew somebody that was incarcerated with Ronald Defeos in Protective Custody Up-State New York and they had conversations threw the cell walls. (Apparantly they were next to eachother but in diffrent cells.) He said Ronald Defeo told him stories about his time in the House. He told him that he doesnt remember the House being Haunted. He was a big Acid head in those days. He was tripping alot. (On Acid) Maybe thats what made him lose it. I tried Acid when I was 13 and I remember seeing crazy shyt! But maybe the Murder of his Family did haunt the House after that?

I can't imagine DeFeo having any stories to tell about his time in the house, because other than the kid being a psychopath, life there was probably pretty ordinary. The "haunting" was a hoax perpetrated by subsequent owners of the house.

  • Hey, I could get with that but I'm still spooked by the whole thing. I wouldnt wanna sleep in that House.

  • Thats cool...

I liked the film. thought it was a good horror film, as that genre goes.

Okay, so there’s no pool, but it’s “one of the most beautifully renovated homes in the neighborhood.” In This Economy we can understand someone trying to make a few bucks off a bloodstained nightmare best burned to the ground, right? The Amityville House and the Transformers franchise go hand in hand on this one.

I love that the listing says "Basement: Full" - yikes, no kidding.

If the son didn't kill them the taxes would have. Nice boathouse though.

  • who needs ghosts when you've got dining room wallpaper like that?

  • Zack

@Kitty Graves - you took the words right out of my mouth!

  • chuzzlewit

    This house is bad, Mommy.

you know, Ryan Reynolds is one funny dude. i don't know why he gets cast in a horror, thriller, and action movies and not more comedies.

IMO the Amityville Horror casting was all wrong...i just couldn't suspend my fond Van Wilder memories ("write that down"). but he always does manage to gratuitously take his shirt off for the ladies though, so i guess he'll be around until he loses the killer washboard.

  • dev

you do know that was a remake, right?

  • hotstepper

yeah buzzkill, but what has that got to do with my rant about RR?

  • The Red Pen

"This book will scare the hell out of your" ...

This book will scare the hell out of your what, Jen?

  • JenChungsBaby

In high school when we were superbored we would sometimes drive out and try to find this house. Yes, we were dorks.

  • Clarice City

When I was in High School we used to explore the shuttered state mental hospital- seriously spooky!
