Witnesses Allegedly Saw Brutal Queens Attack, Didn't Help

While discussing the death of a 23-year-old woman who was brutally beaten and raped in a Flushing alley, Assemblywoman Grace Meng told NY1, based on witnesses and surveillance video, "At least three people were seen to have watched the beating and the assault and did not scream, did not yell for help, did not do anything. I myself have been really disappointed and angry." One witness did call 911 and police were able to arrest Carlos Salazar Cruz. The victim, Yu Yao, who had immigrated from China two months ago on a student visa, had suffered a fractured skull, bleeding on the brain and trauma to the vagina (she was beaten and raped with a pipe) and was taken off life support on Friday.

This is why I always carry mace and educate myself in self defense so I at least have a fighting chance. Ladies, please do the same. Unfortunately you cannot count on people to help you in times of distress and you may have to save yourself.

May this poor girl rest in peace, this is such an unbelievably tragic story.

He knocked her out with a pipe from behind and then dragged her off while she was unconscious. I don't think mace or self-defense would have helped her here.

And what makes you think she wasn't carrying mace or knew self-defense? You should watch you tone because it sounds like you are blaming victims for not knowing self-defense.

My comment is related to witnesses not helping victims and to do your best to give yourself a CHANCE of survival.

I witnessed the helicopter crash last summer, while brunching outside. not a single person called 911. most people were astounded, said they hoped they got help, and went back to eating their omelettes. because of my profession, I started dialing 911 the minute I saw the crash, but I couldn't believe that not one person thought to call 911. I couldn't help but give a lecture.

PLEASE. when you witness something, call 911 IMMEDIATELY. time is of the essence and everyone around you is someone's child.
