Was Muslim's Beating A Hate Crime Or Just Regular Brutality?

052410hatecrime.jpg Relatives of a Bangladeshi immigrant say the savage, broad-daylight beating of their loved one was a hate crime, but detectives are refusing to investigate it as such. Eyewitness 7 reports that Kamal Uddin was "beaten to a pulp" by four unidentified men Saturday afternoon in East New York. His nephew tells reporters, "They used the bad word. 'The motherfucking Muslim, go back to you country.' They started beating him and after that he don't know what happened."

Uddin was taking a late lunch break from his construction job when he was jumped by assailants who did not take any of his belongings. "He has the money," says his uncle. "He has the wallet. He was the watch and the cell phone. Nothing taken. Everything is there with him. It seems to me it's a hate crime." And his daughter tells Eyewitness 7, "He can't even talk. He said yesterday four kids hit him. They attacked him from the back. He can't talk. He's very scared. Very scared."

Uddin sustained internal bleeding and extensive bruises to his face, and arms. Detectives claim that an eyewitness did not hear any racist language during the assault, so at this point they're not treating it as a bias crime.

  • hey it's already illegal to hit people, isn't that enough?
  • goodfella

It’s irrelevant either it’s a hate crime or not. Just get those SOBs who decided to do this to an innocent American, Muslim or not. Christians killing more Christians then all religions combined. Just check all the child molesters, rapists and murderers in this county, I bet they all Christian, not Muslim.

what the fuck is up with the lack of common sense here??

  • psssst, you're on gothamist.

Just another example of how pathetic this country has become when they're actually hairsplitting over intent or what the criminals might have been thinking or might have said, instead of looking at the physical evidence itself.

What exactly is the difference between a savage beating, and a savage beating full of hate? Is there such thing as a savage beating full of love? Maybe this was a "honor beating" therefore there was no hate involved.

    All crimes are hate crimes.

It's time for this crazy world to erase political correctness and reintroduced itself to common sense. It's the only way to save ourselves from ourselves.

How come the man who raped the woman with a metal pipe and killed her in Flushing isn't being charged with a hate crime? Why aren't violence and rapes against women aren't labeled as hate crimes? I think misogyny continues to be more acceptable to a lot of people than racism in this world.

  • snickerdoodle

Good point. Maybe women should start filing hate crimes against their perpetrators? Their civil rights were violated, after all, they were clearly targeted because they were women.

    Was Fat Nick involved?

  • your point being, some muslims are barbaric and he's a muslims and so...what? he deserved it?

are people really this stupid? really? all those tolerance musuems and we havent learned....anything?

    sad.

  • editor - if you delete a comment you should delete the replies too or else the comments dont make sense

  • another issue with marking some crimes as hate crimes and others as regular crimes is it treats some victims more or less important than others

example 1. the nypd has a special hate crimes division. those resources wont be allocated to finding these criminals cause its not being called a hate crime.

example 2. sentencing too is more severe if its a hate crime. a few months ago there was the case where a guy got 7 years for defacing a building because it was considered a hate crime.

if they catch these criminals will they get 7 years? I doubt it. one victims crimes arent treated as severe as the other even though one wasnt even a violent crime against a person but was against property. is that fair? I dont think so.

    hate crimes, a savage hypocrisy

East New York huh? That place sucks

    "Hate Crime" laws are idiotic.

    What does it matter?

  • Daniel

yeah. so is separating "murder" out by "degrees"! AMIRITE!? kill someone on purpose, kill someone on accident, fuck it. it's the needle for you.

  • really!?!?

Do you have an A/C unit in your window? If it fell out and killed someone do you think you deserve the death sentence? What about if your Toyota accelerated uncontrollably and hit someone? You trip and as you fall accidentally push someone down a flight of stairs?

We have degrees in our laws because reasonable people understand that context means everything.

isn't every violent crime a hate crime?

  • longacre

This is why hate crimes laws are idiotic. People who beat the tar out of random people on the street have no place in society no matter their motivation.

  • virjin

so if i were to beat the snot out of an African American or Hispanic person [because i hate them] & i don't use racial slurs, it's just an assault charge? hmmmm, good to know. usa #1!

  • napalm

Just make sure you go to the projects in east NY, Harlem or the Bronx to fulfill your hate adventures.

  • Guest

uhm, since when and why in the world are you helping hate-filled people? i find your statement incredibly odd...

    +1

  • scrappymcgee

He can't talk, but his nephews said they used racial slurs, yet an eyewitness says they did not hear any racial slurs. How does his newphew know what was said?

  • Daniel

perhaps he knows what a "pen" is.

  • i wonder if the outrage would be the same in a muslim country if a muslim beat the piss out of a non-muslim.

  • S.K.

the perps beating the Muslim man were black, but if the perps were white, you know that it would be a hate crime, and all the self-appointed guardians of civil rights would be up in arms.

  • snickerdoodle

Don't be silly. Such an act would be celebrated.

  • because its his uncle, and racial slurs would make it a hate crime.

  • whitecastlerock

Clearly this wasn't a hate crime-4 pieces of shit decided to pulverize someone out of love. As this happened in broad daylight, and "the eyewitness" never heard the attackers utter any racial epithets, is there at least a fucking description of these cretins? Or would that be too incendiary to publish anywhere?

"Hate Crime Or Just Regular Brutality?"

Sadly, this would actually be debated in a court of law.
