81-Year-Old Squirrel Killer Sentenced To 30 Days

An 81-year-old Army vet from East Northport, Long Island is now behind bars for killing a squirrel. William Thomas was convicted in February of misdemeanor animal abuse, and is now serving out his 30-day sentence. According to Newsday, he used a pellet gun to shoot the animal at his home back in 2008, and neighbors have told authorities that the old man would leave bait in his yard and shoot at animals from a window. He's been arrested 12 times in 5 years for wildlife violations.

His daughter has expressed concern over proper medical treatment while locked up, as he allegedly has a host of health problems, including dementia and hypothyroidism. She told the paper, "He has a lot of confusion and dizziness. Hopefully, the people in there have respect for the elderly."

Thomas says that he'll be a model inmate, and plans to "do everything they ask me to do [and] refrain from causing [any] problems while I'm incarcerated." As for his animal victims, he says he has nothing against them, (*shakes fist*) "only when they try to destroy my property."

People insulting this man don't know squirrels. They carry rabies, can be rather nasty, and are pests. Besides they are squirrels, not Condors or some endangered species. If they threw everyone who shot them in jail good luck getting food because most of the rural population would be in jail.

This article is obviously bogus. There's no such thing as an 81 year old squirrel. Squirrels don't live that long.

Geez. I shoot squirrels, too. When a local cop asked me why, I told him we'd run out of steeeeeenking Democrats. He laughed, shook my hand, and walked away.

Some years ago I was out hunting with my favorite VP, Dick Cheney. "Look, Mr Vice President!" I cried. "There's a Democrat!" Darth Vader swung around and fired, but he's old, and while his heart was in the right place, his shot was not, and he managed to pop an old buddy, instead.

Who owns the squirrel? Sounds like the old man has grounds for a vandalism case against the owner.

As for those here who consider the man as flouting the law...if that is the case, then we need to lock up the majority of Congress as well.

YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!.. How in the HELL are you doing to put an 81 year old man in jail for animal cruelty for killing squirrels in a state that allows HUNTING? People hunt in every state of this country. They hunt everything from squirrel, rabbit, possum, raccon, deer the list is endless. If you want to charge a man for something like this, you have to OUTLAW IT FIRST.. You are going to catch all kinds of hell when you try to take away a mans rights to hunt in this country.. THIS JUDGE NEEDS TO HAVE HIS LICENSE REVOLKED..THIS MANS FAMILY NEEDS TO SUE THE HELL OUT OF THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM IN THIS COUNTY FOR WRONGFUL IMPRISONMENT. Where is the state judicial review board during this ignorance. This is nothing more than blatent mis use of judical authority on the part of this judge.

And by the way NO I DO NO HUNT.. NO I DO NOT HATE ANIMALS. SQUIRREL HUNTING IS NOT ILLEGAL NOR IS MOST OTHER KINDS OF HUNTING OF WILD ANIMALS.. IF it was half of your OWN families would be in jail!

WATCH THE VIDEO AND YOU WILL REALIZED THAT HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN LOCKED FOR YEARS.

  • huffingpaint

This happens in East Northport all the time.. I'm glad they're finally cracking down.

  • OldeSmoothy

This is beneath sick. After several warnings he continues to float the law. One year in the slammer. Case closed.

  • Osamas Pajamas

Nah. Arrest the government instead -- it is far more dangerous and expensive than a geezer poppin' bushy-tailed rodents.

My Southern Mom in Law used to cage, cook & eat them

during the depression of 1929 She still call's em "Tree Rats"she is 93 and also used to make her own soap.

Those "tree rats" in Madison square park will mug you and

run you off a bench ,they should have met this old man.

Anyway this old coot seems cantankerous.

Okay, killing squirrels isn't bad if you both kill them painlessly and have a really good reason to do so. Otherwise it's cruelty. I don't care how many "pumps" you put into a BB gun, or what sort of pellet you use, that's not a kind way to kill a squirrel. You need a .22, and even then you don't get a certain kill every time. BBs and pellets maim, mostly.

And part two is the reasoning. He wasn't killing them for a good reason, not for food or even because of property damage. He was just a sick fuck.

  • Amanda Harletsch

because knowing you guns this well but knowing NOTHING of ethical behavior makes you a very fine brute!

  • dadoc

Wrongo in the absolute. You don't even have to go to the .22's, or the high end 1200 fps .177 Gamos. At 800fps, even with a BB, even the venerable Crosman 760 will take out squirrels. While not quite the ideal or compliant with hunting regs, adequate weapon for the purpose. Just sayin'.

  • ozik

I never said a BB gun couldn't take out a squirrel, I said it couldn't be trusted to do it humanely. I come from a rural poor area where everybody hunted everything, squirrels were constantly getting knocked out of trees by 22s and surviving though badly injured. Yeah, a BB can kill a squirrel but it is less likely to do so, it's more likely to hurt it very badly than a proper bullet.
