81-Year-Old Squirrel Killer Sentenced To 30 Days

An 81-year-old Army vet from East Northport, Long Island is now behind bars for killing a squirrel. William Thomas was convicted in February of misdemeanor animal abuse, and is now serving out his 30-day sentence. According to Newsday, he used a pellet gun to shoot the animal at his home back in 2008, and neighbors have told authorities that the old man would leave bait in his yard and shoot at animals from a window. He's been arrested 12 times in 5 years for wildlife violations.

His daughter has expressed concern over proper medical treatment while locked up, as he allegedly has a host of health problems, including dementia and hypothyroidism. She told the paper, "He has a lot of confusion and dizziness. Hopefully, the people in there have respect for the elderly."

Thomas says that he'll be a model inmate, and plans to "do everything they ask me to do [and] refrain from causing [any] problems while I'm incarcerated." As for his animal victims, he says he has nothing against them, (*shakes fist*) "only when they try to destroy my property."

People insulting this man don't know squirrels. They carry rabies, can be rather nasty, and are pests. Besides they are squirrels, not Condors or some endangered species. If they threw everyone who shot them in jail good luck getting food because most of the rural population would be in jail.

  • gregory

This article is obviously bogus. There's no such thing as an 81 year old squirrel. Squirrels don't live that long.

  • Osamas Pajamas

Geez. I shoot squirrels, too. When a local cop asked me why, I told him we'd run out of steeeeeenking Democrats. He laughed, shook my hand, and walked away.

Some years ago I was out hunting with my favorite VP, Dick Cheney. "Look, Mr Vice President!" I cried. "There's a Democrat!" Darth Vader swung around and fired, but he's old, and while his heart was in the right place, his shot was not, and he managed to pop an old buddy, instead.

Who owns the squirrel? Sounds like the old man has grounds for a vandalism case against the owner.

As for those here who consider the man as flouting the law...if that is the case, then we need to lock up the majority of Congress as well.

  • exposingthelie2

YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!.. How in the HELL are you doing to put an 81 year old man in jail for animal cruelty for killing squirrels in a state that allows HUNTING? People hunt in every state of this country. They hunt everything from squirrel, rabbit, possum, raccon, deer the list is endless. If you want to charge a man for something like this, you have to OUTLAW IT FIRST.. You are going to catch all kinds of hell when you try to take away a mans rights to hunt in this country.. THIS JUDGE NEEDS TO HAVE HIS LICENSE REVOLKED..THIS MANS FAMILY NEEDS TO SUE THE HELL OUT OF THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM IN THIS COUNTY FOR WRONGFUL IMPRISONMENT. Where is the state judicial review board during this ignorance. This is nothing more than blatent mis use of judical authority on the part of this judge.

  • exposingthelie2

And by the way NO I DO NO HUNT.. NO I DO NOT HATE ANIMALS. SQUIRREL HUNTING IS NOT ILLEGAL NOR IS MOST OTHER KINDS OF HUNTING OF WILD ANIMALS.. IF it was half of your OWN families would be in jail!

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

WATCH THE VIDEO AND YOU WILL REALIZED THAT HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN LOCKED FOR YEARS.

  • huffingpaint

This happens in East Northport all the time.. I'm glad they're finally cracking down.

  • OldeSmoothy

This is beneath sick. After several warnings he continues to float the law. One year in the slammer. Case closed.

  • Osamas Pajamas

Nah. Arrest the government instead -- it is far more dangerous and expensive than a geezer poppin' bushy-tailed rodents.

    You said that already. *Yawn*

  • Dwayne Hoover

Wow, after watching the video, that guy is a certified psychopath. Too bad he only got 30-days.

  • Amanda Harletsch

    the man is sick!

  • nu yorker

all time low right here...whats next? jail for killing roaches and rats?

  • wow 14th street

My Southern Mom in Law used to cage, cook & eat them

during the depression of 1929 She still call's em "Tree Rats"she is 93 and also used to make her own soap.

Those "tree rats" in Madison square park will mug you and

run you off a bench ,they should have met this old man.

Anyway this old coot seems cantankerous.

  • ozik

Okay, killing squirrels isn't bad if you both kill them painlessly and have a really good reason to do so. Otherwise it's cruelty. I don't care how many "pumps" you put into a BB gun, or what sort of pellet you use, that's not a kind way to kill a squirrel. You need a .22, and even then you don't get a certain kill every time. BBs and pellets maim, mostly.

And part two is the reasoning. He wasn't killing them for a good reason, not for food or even because of property damage. He was just a sick fuck.

  • Amanda Harletsch

because knowing you guns this well but knowing NOTHING of ethical behavior makes you a very fine brute!

  • dadoc

Wrongo in the absolute. You don't even have to go to the .22's, or the high end 1200 fps .177 Gamos. At 800fps, even with a BB, even the venerable Crosman 760 will take out squirrels. While not quite the ideal or compliant with hunting regs, adequate weapon for the purpose. Just sayin'.

  • ozik

I never said a BB gun couldn't take out a squirrel, I said it couldn't be trusted to do it humanely. I come from a rural poor area where everybody hunted everything, squirrels were constantly getting knocked out of trees by 22s and surviving though badly injured. Yeah, a BB can kill a squirrel but it is less likely to do so, it's more likely to hurt it very badly than a proper bullet.

  • Dead Himmler

For an American male it is a rite of passage to kill a squirrel with a BB gun at the of age 12 or below.

  • Amanda Harletsch

    you are sad

  • Petey

A guy kills a rodent on his own property, and he goes to jail?

  • Amanda Harletsch

    dumb comment!

Selfishness and power by killing roedents is sooooooo advanced and soooo totally sophisticated!

Is this the only way humans like you prove your superiority?! By killing in the privacy of your own room?!

the episode of rescue ink that features this old bag

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

wrong, don't you people ever read the story or just the caption??? JEEZ

Yes, this man was featured on Rescue Ink. He was filmed dancing with no apparent problem. Neighbors had videos of him doing a lot more to the animals then just using a BB gun. Some people on the show believed that he is just using his age to get sympathy from the judges (and get away with animal abuse). Seems to be working.

  • solidago

    Felix Christine got a girlfriend!

  • dadoc

Regardless of your proclivities, you just have to imagine the scene:

In the yard, orange jumpsuits, buncha tattooed recidivists approach the old guy, as he sits squirting tobbacco juice at ants.

"Hey Old-Timer, whatcha in for? Lifer for murder, kidnapping?"

"Nah, shot a squirrel in my backyard."

    "You, uh, uhmm, WHTF?"

"Yeah, beady eyed little bugger, deserved it, goshdarnit!

But was nothin' compared to the Spring of '45. There we were....."

I call dibs on the screenplay!

  • Radbecca

I'm not into killing squirrels unless you need to eat, but this punishment is excessive. I sure could use a BB gun for those in the subway stations who walk slowly during morning rush hour.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

have you seen what he did. gpoint post the link to the show. Why don't you at least know the whole truth before you state it is excessive. this man was caught dancing in a swing club while he went to the courthouse with a wheel stand which he never uses outside the court. This man has kill many animals since the 80s' there is video of him stepping on birds heads and twisting their head off. he nailed a headless squirrel to his tree. and on top of that he harassed and threatened 2 neighbors of his for over 20 years.

  • Guest

You're one to talk about knowing the whole truth before running your mouth (typing). You're the epitome of hypocrite and ignorant jackass.

  • Radbecca

Calm down, brother. I'm working from a revamped Commodore 64 here... no video capability... just lucky to pull up this page in less than half an hour.

  • Sinchy

that Rescue ink show was pretty nice TV

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

This clip is sad, the old fuck was terrorizing this poor lady and finally after years of harassment and threats, they gave her a protection of order.

  • youngpro

you mean an Order of Protection, asshole.

  • HughGass

This is silly. I walk through the park with my toddler every morning and have taught him to throw rocks at squirrels. He calls them over and throws a rock at it. If he gets one, he claps. He loves puppies though, hates squirrels.

  • Amanda Harletsch

    dumb ass

    http://animals.change.org/blog/view/baltimores_underage_animal_abusers

  • sexisicilian

Good parenting, I hope you don't raise a serial killer. They usually start killing animals first. If I see you throw rocks at any animal, I will throw a rock at you & see if you like it:)

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

ignore him, he can only say this on the internet. he is a coward and so is his son. His son will be a pussy as his father bitch. Darwin fails. Due to technology, it is no longer survival of the fittest but now cowards and passive aggressive people survive. But if I ever see his kid do it then I would grab his kid and kick its ass as hugh gass crawl back to his rock

  • sexisicilian

Will do Felix, my daughter wants to be a vet or an ASPCA cop so I am happy that a have a daugther who luvs animals as much as I do ... I taught her well:))

not much to say about that.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

holy shit, it gets worse, he has a large confederate flag at this front porch. as I stated over and over and over and over again, those that harm animals also harm people.

  • sexisicilian

I can't watch animals being tortured, but hopefully this fuckin lowlife will die sooner rather than lata:)

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

holy shit, this gets better, rescue ink took videos of him dancing in the swing club.

  • Tony

Now you're just repeating yourself. A bit obsessed, are you? Shut up already if all you're going to do is cuss and repeat yourself. You're boring everyone.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Holy crap, this man went to the court room with a walker when he doesn't even use one when he is killing the birds by stepping on their heads in the backyard.. This man in fucked up

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Yep, he needs someone to beat him in jail.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

This fucking old man should be ganged r$a%pe in jail. if you look at this hulu clip, he has killed and tortured many wild life. why the fuck move in the wild and then complain there is wildlife in your property? seriously. sick

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Bernie Goetz, the squirrels need you. let's get this old fuck.

  • Pachinko

Do they know what type of squirrel it is? Red squirrels are unprotected in NYS and can be taken down at anytime and I don't believe a pellet gun is considered a firearm, so a person doesn't need a license. I understand squirrel stew is delicious.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Fuck, it started since the 80s, he trapped them, drown them, tossed their dead bodies over the neighbor yards. Fucked, he hammered a headless squirrel on his tree. shit.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

thanks for that and at the courtroom after he was convicted he states it was ok since it was done on his property and not on other people's property. He doesn't haven't any regrets.

  • hotstepper

i hate to break it to you folks, but hunting squirrel in NYS is perfectly legal. the old man was breaking hunting and firearm regulations, but the animal abuse charge is pure poppycock.

    BUT THE POOR ANIMALS!!!

    *BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED*

  • hotstepper

here's a map with the squirrel hunting season by county.

    http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/29460.html

  • jaycjay

Probably wouldn't have had animals "destroying his property" if he wasn't attracting them by leaving food out for them.

  • LB

Not true . Them Tree rats are always foraging for food wherever they can ! If they could get into your house to get some food , They would !

  • RoboticInsides

    Serves the old man right.

  • JenChungsBaby

This guy needs a paintball gun. Just as fun but no dead animals.

  • WesleySnipesAlot

    All aboard for the trollercoaster!

  • Cannibal

Did the squirrels show up in court?

  • hotstepper

WTF? jail for killing a little squirrel? now i've heard everything!

  • LeLY

    *Sigh*

Another example of well spent resources all around.

How much is it going to cost to jail this guy for killing vermin on his own property?

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

he did it several times after they asked him to stopped so he deserves this punishment. he was facing a year.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

nasty old man. glad he is in the slammer.

  • LB

Why, Because he fought back against nature and was winning ? Them damn squirrels are pests you know ! Ever tired planting a vegetable garden in your backyard and see those damn things tearing through the plants ? It's nerve-racking , You put in all that work making it look as good as it can, Only to have a bunch of these "Tree rats" destroy it . I'm not a nature hater but it does get to the point of grating ones nerves . Obviously it happened to Mr. Thomas and he snapped ! Lol

  • SmartiPantz

Not "Nasty," sick. This is what can happen when Dementia patients (his daughter mentions this diagnosis) are not supervised. Alzheimer's and other dementias can & will distort the patient's mind.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'
  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Rescue Ink exposed him. If you want the link that gpoint posted, you see him dancing in the swing club and yet goes to the courtroom with a walker which he never uses.
