Fatal Shooting in Prospect Heights This Morning

051910map.jpg The NYPD has confirmed tips that a man was fatally shot in the head in Prospect Heights this morning, at the corner of Lincoln Place and Franklin Avenue. Details are scant, but one tipster, who passed a pool of blood on the street, tells us that she heard neighbors saying the victim was shot after a dispute over a woman. According to the NYPD, the 34-year-old black male was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital. We're told the shooting occurred around 11 a.m., there is no official motive, and no arrests have been made yet.

The boundaries of Prospect Heights have traditionally have been Washington Avenue, Atlantic Avenue, Flatbush Avenue.

Once you cross Washington Avenue towards Classon Avenue you are in Crown Heights - despite the fact that realtors and others now state that the boundary between Prospect Heights and Crown Heights is Franklin Avenue, not Washington Avenue.

On the big local maps in every subway station, this exact corner is covered by the words "Prospect Heights". I'm not saying it's correct, but obviously the MTA is on the side of the realtors, and you know that those real estate designations always become the truth after enough people say it long enough. That's how Boerum Hill and Tribeca got invented!

I live on this corner, and don't much care what neighborhood it is, but either way it's sad. I heard the shots yesterday out my window, and was sad that this is still happening around here.

Yeah as the weather gets nicer, more people are outside which could be a potential problem. Especially since the economy is still down, money is really tight, less jobs, and the future doesn't look very bright for these folks. They decide to act on impact for whatever reason and turn to gun violence. I wish people would stop hiding behind weapons. Guns are for cowards.

i'm agreeing with 646. don't ask me why, but the signs are all pointing to a rough summer. i'm not pontificating or being sarcastic, it's just that the spring crime preview has shown an uptick, and so far, tension seems to be building. it's vague, i know, and i do hope that i'm wrong or that there's some kind of turnaround.

Any description of the shooter? Never mind. All resources have been dispersed to the 5 boroughs to see if Banksy had a bowel movement today...

The summer is more violent cause of the heat. It seems that there has been a slight up tick in crime. Maybe it just seams that way as i don't live there any more just hear about it. But I think with the summer heat and the violence being how its been there are many folks thinking this.

There are a lot more hot and bothered people on the streets.

YEah I used to live right on E. PKWY and Franklin, that's a serious drug corner.

Def crown heights, also this summer may get pretty ugly

  • Mondiggy

Why do you say it might get pretty ugly this summer?

I was just around the corner when this happened. The fella was shot through the neck.

A fire engine was driving up Franklin just after it happened. The firemen were on the victim within a minute of being shot, but looking at the amount of blood, I am not sure they could do much.

Great, right across the street from me. Every time you think this neighborhood is in danger of re-joining the civilized world, a couple of idiots decide to shoot, stab, or slash each other.

  • duckumu

    crown heights, not prospect heights

  • Mr. Know-It-All

Right. I live in the next block on Franklin Ave. and only realtors call this neighborhood Prospect Heights.
