Possible Banksy in Harlem?

Did Banksy hit Harlem? A reader sent in this photo from the neighborhood today—we're currently awaiting test results from our street art lab technicians to see if it's the real deal. If it is, this may have been his first venture uptown this trip. If you've spotted more pieces, send them our way!

  • I live like a block from this, and i've seen it many times. I've seen other pictures of Banksy's work and I've heard much about him. Once you see it close up you realize the detail. This picture ain't too good. I wouldn't judge it until you see it for yourself.

He should tag the Shamrock Stables–a double scoop for Gothamist

  • Tangaroo

I think this Banksy stuff is pretty neat, but I agree, it's suffering from overexposure here.

If Banksy skipped the line to see Marina Abramovic and then proceeded to spray paint her in the face, we would have major Gothamist uproar.

To all the haters commenting on Banksy. This post was put up 1-1/2 hours ago and already has 1,542 page views.

    Jen Carlson owns you.

Meh. Princess Hijab did this first and far better.

Don't forget to buy the Banksy t-shirt at the concession stand when you see the movie!

  • Danny

Wrong. Princess Hijab started in 2006. Banksy has been doing grafitti since the early nineties. They have very different styles and are equally as talented in my opinion. There is no such thing as a Banksy shirt or any branded products aside from art books, pieces and now a film. Also, does it feel good to hate on an artist for figuring out a way to be successful doing what they love while they're still alive?

  • SuburbanAntiChrist

I wasn't referring to when Princess Hijab and Banksy started hitting the streets. If you look at this photo the cheerleader is wearing a hijab. My point was that Princess Hijab has done a more interesting job of representing this concept.

Also, I wasn't aware that Banksy was into graffiti. My understanding is that graff is primarily a freehand letter-based art form with occasional caricature. I think most astute viewers and fans of these forms would place Banksy firmly in the street art - not graff - category. Don't really recall any of the OG graff guys using stencils but feel free to correct me.

Thanks for listing all of the (currently) available 'Banksy Industries Merchandise™'. I still can't wait until he releases his line of keychains and shot glasses.

Oh, and Danny, interesting how you've appeared for the first time today to defend your pal Banksy. So which is it - Movie Company Flack or Merchandising Arm Flunkie?

  • Danny

This isn't Banksy, and yeah, you're right Princess Hijab is way better than this.

Also, you are correct, I don't read Gothamist. I saw a link claiming an obvious not Banksy piece was his and decided to take a look. I don't care for self righteous commentators hating on other people's success. Especially when they start playing the stupid marketing/sellout card.

As far as merch, my point was, he doesn't have any. God forbid an artist have a book of his work available. He's supposed to have pieces of art, he's an artist. Oh, and I forgot that making an independent film and doing guerrilla marketing makes you a sell out. In regards to who I am, I just hate ignorant statements and misinformation. I have nothing to do with Banksy other than being an appreciator of his work, which is a lot more than just stencils. Cheers.

  • TheKlaus

May I hate on it because it just plain isn't good?

  • Danny

This is not a Banksy piece. This is a a piece of something. Stating that Banksy is not a good artist is an ignorant statement. You may not appreciate their style, method or message; but skill and talent are obvious.

  • TheKlaus

I disagree. I see very little skill or talent in either his concepts or his execution.

  • Danny

Well, to each their own I guess, but I am sad for either your lack of appreciation of good art or your willingness to judge with out the proper scope of knowledge on the subject.

  • Danny

    Not Banksy.

  • Danny

Also, hate on Gothamist all you want for jocking/over coverage, but don't hate on the artist for doing his art.

  • Alex

How many fucking Bansky posts are there going to be?

GUY PAINTS HIT ON WALL we get it

  • whitecastlerock

    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • suepart

unlike his other pieces, this one has no kind of political statement. if this is his, which i suspect not. also, the quality of the spray is much less focused- an amateurish copy at best. the giveaway is in the lines. this looks more like commercial garbage done in the style of Banksy, with an equally dated theme (quentin tarantino kill bill nonsense)

  • Guest

Eh, at least he's more interesting than the sit-and-stare woman at the MoMA.

  • JGNY

No he isn't. While occasionally provocative his pictures are clever T-Shirts. She is actually posing interesting questions about the nature of art and institution(and making people cry to boot) at MoMA. Big difference.
