Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said that the 31-year-old police officer who was struck by a motorcycle while chasing stolen car suspects in Bensonhurst is "still in extremely critical condition... The situation has not changed." Carlos Olmedo, a four-year veteran of the force and father of three, suffered serious brain injuries since being hit on Sunday, and his family and colleagues have been keeping a bedside vigil at the hospital. Kelly added, "He's a terrific young police officer and was extremely well respected. This underscores the dangers of the job."

Three suspects, all 18 years old, have been arrested: The Post reports that Tiku Qoko, Sefer Mujo and Mario Koruni, were all charged with stealing a 2008 Toyota Corolla, while Quojo and Mujo were "also charged with assaulting a police officer, a felony." Koruni's mother told the Daily News, "I feel sorry for the police (officer) for sure, because he's a father too," but said of her son, "All boys are making trouble but he's not bad."

The motorcyclist who struck Olmedo is also in the hospital. Vitali Trych, who was described as "sober and licensed," suffered internal injuries and broke his knee. His wife told the News, "He has a tube in his lungs."

Hi Brian E. I couldn't help but read your comment and I feel for your room mate. Listen, I am a relative of the injured officer and if your story can help to put this punk away I would appreciate it. I hear that he's the neighborhood trouble maker and I'm sure your story can help. Is there anyway that I can get in touch with you. Please advise. Thank you.

NYPD family praying for cop hit by motorcycle

I feel sorry for Officer Carlos Olmedo, and we are praying for him. When I seen it on the news I was saying shoot right in my neighborhood Then all at once The name Mario Koruni came on shoot This is the same guy that Him and his friend mugged my roommate on 79street and 20 ave on Jan 22,2010 when he ... See Morewas coming home from work. Then today I read in the newspaper

[The mother of one of the suspects Olmedo was chasing when he got hurt Sunday was pulling for the officer.

"I feel sorry for the police (officer) for sure, because he's a father too," said the mother of 18-year-old Mario Koruni, who declined to give her name.

    Still, she defended her son.

"All boys are making trouble but he's not bad," she said.]

My roomate had to spend over 10 hours in the Hosp,go back to the doctor several times then buy med for chest and all. Then take off work to go to court. Was scared to work at night to were he had to walk home from the subway not knowing if he will get jumped from behind and beat up just so some young guys to steal his money and credit cards to put gas in there van. To know this guy Mario Koruni was given chance after chance and he is over 18 under 21 My roommate even said he don't think he learn his lesson when he was just given a lite slap on the wrist I feel he should be sent up for a long time. For this just happen in Jan 2010 and he still doing the same thing doing robbery and mugging at night. His P.O. should put him away until he learns he can't be robbing and mugging people. I sure he might be a good boy in front of his mom But he's 18 and should be a young man not the baby boy he is. Hopefully he get's help before he KILLS someone and his mom will still say he's a good boy. Why is he allow out after dark when on probation and he still doing these things? The courts should know this guy Mario Koruni does not care who he hurts or steal from.... brian e button

Welcome to the NYC criminal justice system. The police keep locking them up, and even if convicted, the courts just give them wrist slaps.

Although the motocyclist wasn't charged, I have to wonder how fast he was going. Maybe the cop's injuries wouldn't be nearly so serious if the motorcyclist had only been going slower.

I saw a picture of that motorcycle with its modified mufflier tailpipe. Motorcycles like that race maniacally around the streets of south Brooklyn all the time setting off car alarms and keeping residents awake at night.

Making trouble meaning innocent trouble. When is it okay for boys to steal cars?

  • Brooklynbobby

Koruni's mother told the Daily News, "I feel sorry for the police (officer) for sure, because he's a father too," but said of her son, "All boys are making trouble but he's not bad."

    Her IQ must be 10.

for real. it's almost become a bad joke that whenever these thugs cause trouble, the family says they're good kids. sorry, not all kids are out stealing cars and running down cops.

  • Petey

The guy who hit the cop with the motorcycle wasn't one of the suspects, just an unfortunate guy who was driving down the block. The 2 of the 3 also had recently been arrested for selling weed, and had gotten ACDs and community service. I guess this will violate their ACD requirements.

  • jackmurphy

you are correct, my bad. I meant the kids in the stolen car when I was dismayed at the mother's statement. Sounds like the guy on the bike was just unlucky.

  • Petey

I'm really not that surprised. These relatives of these miscreants always say the same lines. I swear they must have some sort of book.

    "They're good kids"

"They were just turning their life around"

    "They just made a mistake"

All while holding up their middle school graduation picture.
