Bloomberg Won't Close Fire Companies Yet

2010_05_ft.jpg Even though he mentioned that 20 fire companies would be closed to save $5.6 million to help the city's grim budget, the Daily News reports that Mayor Bloomberg will hold off on the closures, just in case the state comes through with some funds, saying, "I'm going to wait and see... We don't have a budget yet, and until then, there's no reason to do anything. There is a requirement of 45 days' notice before you close a company or a firehouse and we will comply with the law." The News says he was expected to send out the notices yesterday, but now he wants to see the city's tax revenue over the next few weeks.

61 people were displaced after an early morning fire in Brooklyn on Monday, and not a peep from mainstream media. Can't imagine why...

Oh mike and your scare tactics!...Keep doing what you do best, run this city like a buisness.

Out of all the civil services FDNY generates the least amount of revenue for the city, is it any wonder he wants to start the cuts there?

how the hell would you expect FDNY to generate revenue? They save lives not make money. yep Mike runs this city as if it was a personal backyard.

Orthodox Jewish leaders are furious with Mayor Bloomberg for pulling $16 million worth of day care vouchers that he restored last year -- just two weeks before Election Day.

Believe me I don't expect the FDNY to generate revenue but I'm not so sure about Mikes intentions. actually the city (mikey B.) has each FDNY company do building inspections 3 times a week, the units serve summonses and violations to building owners and occupants (all wich are usually thrown out in court or ignored by the dept of buildings). He's trying to make the FD profitable and at the same time he knows the FDNY is the city's cheapest insurance policy!

AS for the Orthodox, It's about time they stop getting so many handouts but don't worry, I'm sure they'll be getting some HUGE kickbacks in the near future.

do you mean inspections as they failed to do at Deutsche bldg which resulted in the death of firefighters??? And the link is how Bloomberg bought this election with taxpayers' money. it should be illegal for him to extended their day care vochers for their bloc voting.

low blow... very dark day in fdny history and the history of nyc...

so much finger pointing... Project was sped along by JP morgan chase.

    unfortunetly FDNY took the fall

"The Department of Buildings (DOB) granted the project a commonplace alteration permit, the kind that is only supposed to be approved when a project "does not change" a building's use—precisely the opposite of what was planned at the Deutsche site. According to one subsequent law enforcement report, this unusual choice of permit "allowed the building to undergo concurrent abatement and demolition," a rare and risky venture. Had a demolition permit been required instead, the building would have become the province of the DOB's demolition experts, literally called the B.E.S.T. team. Instead, "inexperienced inspectors who volunteered for the assignment and never traced the standpipe" were the ones regularly on site, with B.E.S.T. inspectors in a secondary role, the same investigative report concluded."
