Carriage Horses Unharmed In Central Park Crashes

carriagehorsecp.jpg The two carriage horse accidents that happened this month left two horses uninjured. But the ASPCA warns that these were lucky breaks for the equine, and the industry should be banned before a horse, or person, is seriously injured.

The organization's Anita Kelso Edson told us, "Though no complaints were officially lodged with the ASPCA's Humane Law Enforcement Department on either accident, [we] independently investigated both incidents. Dr. Pamela Corey, the ASPCA's Director of Equine Veterinary Services, confirmed that both horses were examined multiple times and neither horse was injured." Corey tells us, "These two horses fortunately escaped unscathed from these accidents, but others in the past haven't been so fortunate. Horses and traffic are a dangerous combination."

There have been similar accidents in the past, and some spooked horses have even died after deadly dashes through the city.

Neither of these accidents would have happened if:

    1. Cars were banned from the Park

    2. Horses were banned from the streets outside the Park.

I have no idea why any tourist would want a horse drawn carriage ride through the noise, congestion and pollution of the city streets. Likewise, I can't believe in this modern time, we can't ban internal combustion automobiles from the park. If it's good enough for Broadway, it should work for Central Park as well.

Horses ARE banned on streets outside the park, except by special permit, which stopped being granted to carriages in the 90s.

The problem isn't lack of laws, the problem is lack of enforcement. I get it though, the cops are really busy arresting every homeless person in the city every time Obama stops by. Between that and anally raping subway passengers with nightsticks, we really need to cut these poor guys a break.

  • MrManhattan

Well they're certainly not banned from Central Park South, and that's where most of the incidents I hear about happen. I think the idea of a horse-ride through Central park sans cars would be a charming, romantic tourist attraction. But if the horses have to traverse mid-town traffic to get back and forth to the stables, are not treated well, etc., they should be banned.

The City should allocate some space within Central Park to have a stable, and some paddock area, and get the horses off the city streets. As they are, the car infested streets aren't safe for humans, let alone horses.

what?? they are permitted down till 34th street until 3am in the morning.

the whole thing is just so dated. I don't buy the "oh, but it's nostalgic." there are other ways to experience nyc in an old-fashioned way.

  • HughGass

    3. French kitchens
