Suspicious Vehicle On Irving Place Near 14th Street

2010_05_irvpla.jpg As commenters on Gothamist Contribute have noted—"Big police activity around 14th street and Irving - something in a car or truck" and "Flammable containers in a car at 15th and Irving. Bomb squad on scene"—the NYPD and FDNY have been checking out a suspicious vehicle on Irving Place between 14th and 15th Street, right outside Con Edison. It does not appear to be a BMW prototype that was left running with a tarp over it; we hear that there are several gas cans in the rear seat—and some buildings may have been evacuated. Update: The police gave the all clear around 1 a.m. after talking to the car's owner.

I would think that the NYU dorm a block away would be a better terrorist target....

I knew this " If You See Something, Say Something" was going to be a nuisance. I hope no one screws with my commute home today with their overreaction. Please people, don't leave your lunch bags on the platform. In fact, can you not see anything for today? I need to start my weekend early today.....

Just came back from seeing the Buzzcocks at Irving Plaza. In the middle of performing their song E.S.P,, the house lights came up, the music stopped and Pete Shelley read from a note that the police were looking for the owner of a '91 blue Cutlass (maybe the car in question?). Thankfully, they resumed playing and after the show, everyone had to exit along 15th St. and walk east, away from Irving Place.

    Oops-typo-I meant 1st and A.

  • blomdiefk

What radiation incident? I live on 14th btwn. 11st and A. You don't mean yesterday's fire do you? That was real.

  • dadoc

Even CNN is posting this so-far non-incident.

THE ROBOTS JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT THE DONUT SALE AT DUNKINS

  • kazubes

Hahaha so true you're hilarious hahaha!

  • dadoc

Chopper hovering, noisy and annoying, doubt terrorists would target Irving on a Thursday night. Theater in play. Probably much like the "Radiation" incident on 14th between 1st and A this AM.

  • peoplevsgnomes

Say what? I walk on that block every day. The only radiation I worry about is the kind emitting from whatever pesticide is on the produce at Associated Market.

  • palestine

Man, if the terrorists blow up Trader Joe's, I will be very upset. :(

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

true, where would I buy my cheap wine for my Sangria punch?

  • dadoc

Yeah, but ConEd has a big-ass fence around the main stuff, and no infrastructure, just offices. The "Radiation" thing was a hit on a sensor, something about a truck which had already left, will try to get more info tomorrow. Kinda funky after walking into the aftermath of yesterday's fire.

It is next to Con Ed HQ, but yes, probably just a car with gas cans in it.

Then again, keep in mind NYC's Mad Bomber George Metesky, who set off dozens of bombs around the city in the 40s and 50s, was in fact a disgruntled Con Ed employee.

    Oy vey.
